Dhanteras Celebration: Understanding Its Significance and Traditions

Dhanvantari Trayodashi, also known as Dhanteras, is a significant festival celebrated by Hindus. It falls on the Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik Maas. This year, it will be observed on Tuesday, 29th October 2024. The festival marks the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari during the Samundra Manthan with a pot of amrit, the divine nectar.

Dhanteras holds immense importance for the business community. It is considered an auspicious day to start new ventures. People believe that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera on this day brings prosperity and success. New account books are often bought and placed before these deities to seek their blessings.

Dhanteras Significance amp amp Traditions

The festival is also associated with good fortune. If a girl is born on Dhanteras, she is believed to bring wealth and prosperity to her family. She is considered an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, inviting abundance into the household.

On Dhanteras, people buy new utensils, gold, and silver items. This practice is believed to please Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. Many households perform puja rituals involving lighting diyas with four wicks using ghee or oil. Coins and cowry shells are placed on the diya to honour Lord Yamaraj.

Women often lead the puja ceremonies, though men may also participate. The diya is lit to pay respect to deceased family members. The day is marked by prayers for prosperity and well-being.

Historical Story Behind Dhanvantari Trayodashi

The origins of Dhanteras trace back to a mythological event involving Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. Displeased with Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi left his abode. To bring her back, the gods initiated the Samundra Manthan, a divine churning of the ocean.

During this event, various holy items emerged from the ocean, including Lord Dhanvantari with a Kalash full of Amrit and a book of Ayurveda. This day became known as Dhanteras, celebrating health and prosperity.

Kathaa Associated with Dhanvantari Trayodashi

A popular story linked to Dhanteras involves a young prince named Hima. His horoscope predicted death by snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage. To save him, his wife laid out jewellery and coins near their bedroom door and lit lamps throughout the palace.

As Yama, disguised as a serpent, approached, he was blinded by the shine of the jewellery and sat listening to stories all night instead of entering the room. By morning, Yama left, sparing the prince's life. This tale highlights the protective power of light and wealth on Dhanteras.
