mAadhaar App Not Working? UIDAI Launches New Aadhaar App: Here’s What Changes For Users

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to phase out the popular mAadhaar app and has asked users to shift to its newly updated Aadhaar application, which comes with advanced privacy protections, face authentication and selective data-sharing features.

The move has sparked fresh discussions online around Aadhaar card services and the future of digital identity verification in India, with keywords such as "mAadhaar app", "Aadhaar app" and "Aadhaar card" trending across search platforms.

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the older mAadhaar app is gradually being retired for smartphone users across India as part of a broader effort to improve security, performance and user control over Aadhaar-based verification.

What Changes In The New Aadhaar App?

The updated Aadhaar application, now available on both Android and iOS platforms, introduces several new privacy-focused features that were not available in the older mAadhaar app.

One of the biggest additions is face authentication, which allows users to verify identity through facial recognition technology. The app also includes a "Selective Share" feature that lets users choose how much Aadhaar information they want to reveal during verification.

Instead of displaying complete Aadhaar details every time, users can now selectively share limited information such as their name, age status or photograph while masking sensitive details.

The new Aadhaar app also generates secure QR codes that can be scanned at authorised service points for verification purposes.

Why UIDAI Is Retiring The mAadhaar App

UIDAI said the older mAadhaar system was built years ago and no longer met modern digital security requirements. Officials believe the ageing framework struggled against advanced identity fraud risks and often faced technical issues such as slow performance, glitches and syncing failures.

The redesigned Aadhaar application now supports stronger end-to-end encryption and faster biometric verification systems, helping improve security during both data storage and identity authentication.

The authority also says the new platform is designed to align with India's evolving digital privacy and data protection standards.

Users Must Set Up Profiles Again

UIDAI clarified that Aadhaar profiles stored in the old mAadhaar app will not automatically transfer to the new platform.

Users will need to manually download the updated Aadhaar application from official app stores and complete the setup process again. The registration includes entering Aadhaar details, verifying the registered mobile number through OTP authentication and completing an initial face scan.

The app currently supports up to 13 Indian languages and allows users to add as many as five family profiles on a single primary smartphone.

Officials say this family dashboard system is aimed at making Aadhaar management easier for households while maintaining secure access controls.

The update regarding the phase-out of the mAadhaar app was also confirmed through UIDAI's official social media communication channels.
