When Is Muharram? Date And Time

The Islamic calendar is lunar-based, consisting of 12 months and approximately 354 days. Each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. As a result, the Islamic New Year shifts by about 10 to 12 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar.

The crescent moon for Muharram was not sighted in Saudi Arabia on Friday evening i.e. July 05, 2024 which was the 29th day of Dhul Hijjah month. Hence, the authorities in Saudi Arabia announced that the 1st of Muharram 1446 will commence after maghrib or evening prayers on Saturday July 06, 2024. According to Gregorian calendar, July 07, 2024 will be the first day of Muharram in Saudi Arabia, marking the start of the Islamic new year 1446.

The significance of Al Hijra lies in its historical roots. The Hijra in 622 CE was a pivotal event in Islamic history. Facing persecution in Mecca, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers migrated to Medina, where they were warmly received. This migration marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar and established the Muslim community, known as the Ummah.
