Zelenskyy Appeals to US Governors for Military Support Following NATO Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, away from Washington, sought to expand support for US military aid by addressing state governors. He urged world leaders to witness the devastation caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine over two years ago. Zelenskyy's appeal took place at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Salt Lake City, shortly after NATO leaders met in the US capital and promised more assistance for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy Seeks US Aid After NATO

NATO members recently agreed on a new programme to ensure consistent military aid to Ukraine and prepare it for eventual membership in the alliance. They stated that Ukraine is on an "irreversible" path to joining NATO and acknowledged China's role as a "decisive enabler" of Russia in the conflict. Despite this, many Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have been sceptical or opposed to continuing support for Ukraine against Russia's 2022 invasion.

Support from US Governors

Although governors do not vote on US military aid, Zelenskyy's appearance demonstrated his willingness to engage with other American leaders to advocate for his country. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican and current National Governors Association chairman, introduced Zelenskyy to cheers and applause. Cox remarked, "There are things that happen in world affairs. Sometimes it's hard to tell who the good guys and the bad guys are. This is not one of those times."

Zelenskyy emphasised the need for air defence systems, frontline weapons, and support for protecting normal life and rebuilding efforts. "The only thing we ask for is sufficient support — air defence systems for our cities, weapons for our men and women on the frontline, support in protecting normal life and rebuilding," he said. "This is all we need to withstand and drive Russia from our land and to send a strong signal to all other potential aggressors which are watching."

Trade Agreement and Humanitarian Aid

Cox and Zelenskyy signed a trade agreement between Utah and the Kyiv region. In a closed-door meeting with Zelenskyy, several governors from both parties pledged to encourage their states' wealthiest individuals to provide humanitarian aid. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, a Democrat, mentioned that if Trump becomes president again, he might listen to Republican governors who were present at the meeting. "If Mr. Trump becomes president again, perhaps he'll listen to some of the Republican governors that were in the room and us, perhaps, as Democratic governors because it's a humanitarian crisis," Green told The Associated Press.

President Joe Biden highlighted NATO's global role and his differing stance from Trump regarding Ukraine after the summit. While Biden supports continued aid to Ukraine, Trump's scepticism remains a significant hurdle.

Zelenskyy's plea comes at a crucial time as Ukraine continues its struggle against Russian aggression. The support from US governors could play a vital role in garnering further assistance for Ukraine's defence and rebuilding efforts.

The engagement with state governors underscores Zelenskyy's strategy of broadening his appeal within the US political landscape. This approach aims to secure more comprehensive support beyond federal government channels.

The recent developments reflect ongoing international efforts to bolster Ukraine's defences while addressing humanitarian needs arising from the prolonged conflict.
