Why Is TikTok Laying Off 1,000 Employees? Here's What We Know

Popular short video platform TikTok will reduce its workforce worldwide as it is set to fire 1000 employees, The Information reported.

The people working in the operations and marketing teams are affected by the company's latest move to reduce the staff.

Why Is TikTok Laying Off 1 000 Employees Here s What We Know

Reportedly, TikTok is dissolving its global user operations team responsible for tasks like user support and communication. The employees from this team will be reallocated to other departments within the company, including trust and safety, marketing, content, and product teams.

The company has communicated to the employees this week and the affected ones will be notified about their termination of contract today.

Although TikTok has not spoken about the layoffs, industry experts believe that it might be part of cost restructuring as the social media companies bear the brunt of changing government regulations. Another potential factor could be the prospective sale of TikTok's US operations to an American company, driven by concerns over US national security.

The impact of these layoffs on the user experience of TikTok remains uncertain. The company asserts its commitment to maintaining a positive user experience, but with a reduced user support staff, customers may encounter longer response times to their inquiries.

In 2023, TikTok boasted 7,000 employees in the US and reported 150 million users in the country, with approximately 80% of its $20 billion revenue for 2023 originating from the US market. While the layoffs are occurring worldwide, the extent of their impact on users, particularly in TikTok's largest market, remains to be seen.

As TikTok adjusts to these changes, users can only hope for their experience on the app to remain unaffected. The company is likely to prioritise service quality while adapting to its new organizational structure.

Data from Layoffs.fyi, a layoff-tracking website, reveals that last year, 1,187 tech companies collectively laid off 262,595 employees till January. In January alone, 91 tech companies terminated over 24,564 employees.

Among the companies that have reduced their staff are Salesforce, Google, eBay, Amazon, Discord, Twitch, Frontdesk, Pixar, Riot Games, and Swiggy.
