NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are finally on their way back to Earth after an extended nine-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The duo undocked from the ISS this morning aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, marking the end of an unexpectedly prolonged mission. NASA confirmed their departure at 10:35 AM IST, sharing footage of the spacecraft detaching from the station. Their journey home is expected to take approximately 17 hours, with a planned splashdown off the Florida coast.

A Mission That Stretched Beyond Expectations

Williams and Wilmore originally launched on June 5 as test pilots for Boeing's Starliner capsule, expecting to stay in space for just a week. However, multiple technical issues plagued the Starliner, forcing NASA to send the spacecraft back to Earth without its crew in September. The astronauts' return was then rescheduled for a SpaceX flight initially set for February, but delays extended their time in orbit even further.

They have been married for two decades now. He stays away from limelight although his wife is globally renowned figure by now. His background is equally intriguing just like Sunita. Michael serves as a U.S. Marshal, responsible for upholding the law and protecting the judiciary, as per the reports. His experience as a helicopter pilot has given him a deep understanding of risk-taking and discipline- qualities that align with his wife's adventurous space career.

Sunita-Michael's Love Story

They met for the first time in 1987 at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Before joining the NASA, she flew helicopters. Their friendship gradually blossomed into love. However, they opted for a private wedding which was graced by limited set of family members and friends.

Faith and Cultural Ties

As per the reports, Michael is a practising Hindu and has always supported Sunita's spiritual beliefs. It is interesting to note that during her space missions, she carried sacred Hindu texts, including the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, as well as a symbol of Om and a painting of Lord Shiva.

Family and Furry Companions

The couple does not have biological children. However, Williams had earlier expressed a desire to adopt a girl from Ahmedabad. They also share a deep love for animals. Their late Jack Russell terrier, Gorby, even appeared alongside Sunita on the National Geographic show Dog Whisperer. In addition to Gorby, the couple has three more pets-Gunner, Bailey, and Rotor.
