Lorenzo Sewell: Pastor's Inaugural Prayer Echoes Martin Luther King Jr's Dream Speech
During the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, a benediction was delivered by Rev. Lorenzo Sewell, a pastor from Michigan. His prayer paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, referencing King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Sewell's invocation also included elements from the Declaration of Independence, patriotic songs, and gospel hymns.

Rev. Sewell's prayer was a significant moment during the inauguration ceremony, which coincided with Martin Luther King Day. This was only the third time in nearly four decades that a presidential inauguration fell on this federal holiday. Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were also inaugurated for their second terms on this day.
Trump's Acknowledgment of King
President Trump acknowledged the significance of Martin Luther King Day during his address. He expressed gratitude to Black and Hispanic communities for their support during his campaign. "We set records and I will not forget it," Trump stated, promising to work towards making King's dream a reality.
Trump also pledged to end government policies that socially engineer race and gender into public and private life. He promised to create a society based on merit and free from racial bias.
Civil Rights Leaders' Reactions
The reaction to Trump's return to the White House on Martin Luther King Day was mixed among civil rights leaders. Rev. William Barber III spoke at the King Center in Atlanta, rejecting Trump's agenda as unjust. "You never win a mandate to violate justice," Barber declared.
Kings family observed the holiday with service and prayer, while expressing unease about Trump's return. Bernice King, King's youngest daughter, encouraged people to watch the inaugural address despite concerns about potential rollbacks on diversity and inclusion policies.
Sewell's Role and Background
Rev. Lorenzo Sewell has been leading the non-denominational 180 Church in Detroit for seven years. He became a Christian in 1999 after a spiritual revelation. Sewell is known for his charismatic and conservative Christian beliefs, often incorporating politics into his ministry.
Sewell's involvement with Trump's campaign was notable. He hosted Trump at his church, spoke at the Republican National Convention, and participated in various campaign events for faith leaders.
Reactions to Sewell's Benediction
Sewell's benediction received praise from GOP lawmakers and conservative supporters but drew criticism from some Black faith leaders. Rev. Al Sharpton cautioned against misrepresenting King's legacy, emphasizing that King stood for economic justice and activism.
Sewell later announced on social media that he had launched a cryptocurrency to support charitable activities, joining other right-wing figures who have done the same.
The holiday proceedings took place at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Jr. once served as pastor. Rev. Raphael Warnock, now a Senator for Georgia, was absent due to his presence in Washington for the inauguration.
