Who Among These Republicans Would Replace McCarthy?

Just hours after Representative Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position as the Speaker of the House, Republicans began vying to replace him.

The second-ranking Republican in the House, Steve Scalise from Louisiana, along with prominent conservative, Jim Jordan from Ohio, who is also the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, have started making phone calls seeking backing for the position.

Who Among These Republicans Would Replace McCarthy?

The Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, Oklahoma's Representative Kevin Hern, has also been reaching out showing interest in the position.

Multiple people are being considered for the speaker role, one of them being Representative Patrick T. McHenry, a well-versed policy enthusiast from North Carolina who is currently the provisional speaker and is being considered by some Republicans. Additionally, some extremely conservative legislators intend to propose the former president, Donald J. Trump, for the position, given that a speaker isn't required to be a part of the House of Representatives.

Here's a look at the current top contenders:

Steve Scalise of Louisiana

Many House Republicans favour Scalise, the House majority leader who is 57, to be McCarthy's successor.

The former leader of the Republican Study Committee, Scalise, is regarded as more right-leaning than McCarthy, with whom he shares a somewhat tense relationship. He is already rallying considerable support. Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the Republican whip, supports Scalise, according to those in the know, and aspires to secure the second-highest position himself.

Scalise, a Congress member since 2008, is dealing with several hurdles. Diagnosed with blood cancer last summer, he is currently in the thick of aggressive treatment, making it necessary for him to use a mask while participating in house floor voting and press events. Additionally, in 2017, he was gravely injured by a bullet from an anti-Trump radical during a congressional baseball game practice, which has left him with a lingering limp.

Nevertheless, some conventional Republicans still back Mr. Scalise. Shortly following Mr. McCarthy's removal, Texas Representative Tony Gonzales expressed his support for Mr. Scalise on social media.

Jim Jordan of Ohio

At the age of 59, Jordan is recognised as an original and staunch conservative within Congress. Known to be a constant challenge to former speakers, Jordan co-founded the extremely conservative House Freedom Caucus and acted as a mentor to its newer, more unruly participants.

Since joining Congress in 2007, Jordan has garnered significant political influence, ascending through leadership ranks, forming alliances with McCarthy, and earning his position as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Jordan shares close ties with and frequently communicates with Trump. Being his main supporter in Capitol Hill, Jordan has utilized his committee in an effort to interfere in several legal cases involving the former president.

Kevin Hern of Oklahoma

61-year-old Kevin Hern has been serving in Congress since 2018 and currently heads the conservative Republican Study Committee.

This affluent entrepreneur began his journey to success by operating multiple McDonald's franchises.

He promptly started contacting people to measure their support for his potential run, following McCarthy's removal. He argued for his qualifications on Newsmax, stating that Americans are eager for tangible progress. He expressed confidence in his ability to provide such results if they choose him for the role.

Hern didn't clearly confirm his participation in the race on Wednesday but mentioned that people have been inquiring about a new candidate with a unique set of experiences, different from the current runners.
