Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra Delights PM Modi with 'Vande Mataram' in Austria

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was treated to a special performance by the Vienna University Philharmonic during his official visit to Austria. The orchestra, led by Lucknow-born conductor Vijay Upadhyaya, performed a rendition of Vande Mataram, delighting the prime minister.

Vande Mataram for Modi in Austria

Modi's visit to Austria, at the invitation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer, marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years. This year also celebrates the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Austria. Modi described his visit as historic and special.

Vienna's Musical Heritage

Austria is renowned for its rich architectural heritage and its legacy of legendary composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Vienna, the nation's cultural hub, showcased its vibrant musical culture through this performance. Modi shared his appreciation on X, stating, "I got a glimpse of it thanks to this amazing rendition of Vande Mataram!"

The Vienna University Philharmonic is one of the largest music communities globally, comprising over 800 musicians and singers. They play in two orchestras and eight choirs, according to their website.

Indian Conductor's Pride

Grammy Award-winning musician Ricky Kej commented on Modi's post, highlighting Vijay Upadhyaya's achievements. "The conductor is an Indian who makes all of us proud - Vijay Upadhyaya, originally from Lucknow," Kej said. Upadhyaya is also the director of other international orchestras and founded the India National Youth Orchestra.

Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, became a rallying cry for Indian nationalists during the fight for independence from colonial rule. The song holds significant cultural importance in India.

Cultural Exchanges and Cooperation

In a joint statement after their talks, Modi and Nehammer appreciated the long tradition of cultural exchanges between India and Austria. They noted the contributions of Austrian Indologists and leading Indian cultural personalities in fostering these ties.

The leaders also observed the growing interest among Austrians in yoga and Ayurveda. They welcomed efforts to promote further bilateral cultural ties in various fields such as music, dance, opera, theatre, films, literature, sports, and more.

Tourism and Economic Growth

The role of tourism in generating economic growth and fostering understanding between people was recognised by both leaders. They encouraged relevant agencies to work together to expand tourist flows in both directions. This includes expanding direct flight connectivity and other initiatives.

Modi arrived in Vienna from Moscow after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. He held talks with Chancellor Nehammer on recent developments in Europe and West Asia.

The two leaders emphasised the importance of democratic countries like India and Austria working together for international and regional peace and prosperity.
