Vatican Deplores Paris Olympics Ceremony's 'Last Supper' Portrayal

The Vatican expressed regret over the offence caused to Christians by the Olympic Games opening ceremony. A scene in the ceremony, which took place on July 26, evoked Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" and featured drag queens. The Holy See issued a statement in French, expressing sadness over certain scenes and aligning with those who felt offended.

Vatican Criticizes Olympics Ceremony

"At a prestigious event where the whole world comes together to share common values, there should be no ridiculous allusions to religion," the statement read. Critics pointed out that the scene resembled Jesus and his apostles from Da Vinci's renowned painting. It included DJ and producer Barbara Butch, an LGBTQ+ icon, wearing a silver headdress resembling a halo, surrounded by drag artists and dancers.

Response from Catholic Leaders

France's Catholic bishops condemned the scene, stating it mocked Christianity. The artistic director of the ceremony, Thomas Jolly, has consistently denied any inspiration from "The Last Supper." He explained that the scene aimed to celebrate diversity and honour French gastronomy and feasting traditions.

Paris Olympics organisers issued an apology to anyone who felt offended by the tableau. Despite this, the Vatican's spokesman did not immediately respond when questioned about the delay in their response, which came a week after the event and following global outrage from Catholic leaders.

The Vatican's statement highlighted that such events should avoid making frivolous references to religion. This sentiment was echoed by many who felt that the ceremony disrespected Christian beliefs through its portrayal of a significant religious image.

The controversy surrounding the opening ceremony has sparked discussions on how cultural events should handle religious symbols. The organisers' apology indicates an awareness of the sensitivity required when dealing with diverse audiences.

As debates continue, it remains clear that balancing artistic expression with respect for religious sentiments is crucial in global events. The Vatican's reaction underscores the importance of considering religious perspectives in public displays.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential impact of cultural representations on various communities. Ensuring inclusivity while respecting deeply held beliefs is essential for fostering unity at international gatherings.
