US Urges Bangladesh To Ensure Legal Representation For Detainees Amid Chinmoy Das Controversy
The United States has urged Bangladesh to ensure legal representation for all detainees, stressing the importance of adhering to basic human rights principles, according to a report by Times of India.
The call came shortly after a court in Chattogram postponed the bail hearing for Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari by one month, citing the absence of legal counsel.

Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasised the importance of legal representation during a routine briefing. In response to queries regarding Chinmoy Krishna, who faces sedition charges, Patel reiterated that individuals in detention must be provided with appropriate legal protections, as reported by TOI.
He further stressed the US's broader expectations for governments to uphold fundamental freedoms, religious rights, and human dignity.
In Dhaka, interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus invited Indian journalists to independently investigate allegations of persecution against Hindus and other minorities. He affirmed the government's commitment to countering misinformation and fostering unity amidst increasing domestic and international criticism.
After meeting with leaders from various political parties-excluding Sheikh Hasina's Awami League-Yunus dismissed reports of attacks on Hindus as "propaganda." He urged political figures to refrain from provocation, reaffirming Bangladesh's resilience against "fabricated narratives."
The controversy surrounding Chinmoy Krishna's detention has raised concerns regarding minority rights and governance in Bangladesh.
