US Troops Conclude Deployment to Shemya Island Amid Increased Russian Military Activity

Approximately 130 US soldiers are heading back to their bases after being stationed on a remote island in western Alaska. This deployment, which took place last week, was in response to increased Russian military activity near the western US. The soldiers were equipped with mobile rocket launchers, according to a military official.

US Troops Return from Shemya Island Deployment

The operation on Shemya Island included personnel from Alaska, Washington, and Hawaii. These soldiers were part of the 11th Airborne Division and the 1st and 3rd Multi-Domain Task Forces. Sgt 1st Class Michael Sword, representing the 11th Airborne, shared this information via email with The Associated Press.

Russian Military Activity Near Alaska

The deployment coincided with the movement of eight Russian military aircraft and four naval vessels, including two submarines, near Alaska. These activities were part of joint military exercises conducted by Russia and China. Importantly, none of the Russian planes entered US airspace.

A Pentagon spokesperson assured earlier this week that there was no reason for concern regarding these activities. Maj Gen Joseph Hilbert, who leads the 11th Airborne Division, mentioned that the timing of the deployment to Shemya Island was appropriate.

Military Readiness and Exercises

The deployment began on September 12. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported tracking Russian military aircraft near Alaska over four days. Specifically, two planes were detected each on September 11, 13, 14, and 15.

Sgt Sword highlighted that this exercise served as a test of the military's ability to deploy troops and equipment efficiently. "It's a great opportunity to test ourselves in real-world conditions, and another benefit to being stationed in a place like Alaska," Sword stated.

This recent deployment underscores the importance of maintaining readiness in response to international military activities near US borders. The soldiers' return marks the conclusion of this particular operation.
