US Backs Canadian Probe into Alleged Indian Involvement in Sikh Leader’s Death
Following allegations of India's involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Surrey, the US has publicly shown its support for Canada’s investigative efforts. The deceased, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was one of India’s most-wanted terrorists and chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force.
The United States has expressed its support for Canada's efforts to investigate allegations of India's involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in Surrey. The statement was made on Thursday, September 21, by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during a White House news conference.
Details Surrounding the Assassination

The Sikh separatist leader in question is Hardeep Singh Nijjar, aged 45. He served as the chief of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), an organization that has been banned and labeled as terrorist by Indian authorities. Nijjar was one of India’s most-wanted terrorists with a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head. His life ended abruptly when he was gunned down outside a gurdwara in Surrey, located in the western Canadian province of British Columbia, on June 18th. The assailants were two unidentified gunmen who managed to escape after carrying out their fatal mission.
Allegations and Counter-Allegations
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that agents from the Indian government had orchestrated Nijjar's killing. These claims were categorically rejected by New Delhi who described them as 'absurd' and 'motivated'. In what appears to be a retaliatory move, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat following Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over this case.
America Expresses Support for Investigation
In response to these developments between Canada and India, America has publicly voiced its support for an investigation into these allegations. "As soon as we heard from the Canadian Prime Minister publicly about the allegations, we went out publicly ourselves and expressed our deep concern about them," stated National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at a White House press conference. He further emphasized America’s support for "a law enforcement process to get to the bottom of exactly what happened, and to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable".
While Sullivan refrained from making any further comments on the incident, it is clear that this matter has gained international attention. The allegations of India's involvement in Nijjar's assassination have added a new layer of complexity to the already intricate relations between India, Canada, and now America.
Conclusion
The investigation into Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder is ongoing. As it unfolds, it will undoubtedly impact diplomatic relations between these countries. While the truth behind Nijjar’s assassination remains shrouded in mystery for now, one thing is certain: his death has ignited a political firestorm that extends far beyond the borders of Surrey where he was killed.
