US Defends Modi-Lai Congratulatory Exchange Against China's Objections

Amid the diplomatic stir caused by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's exchange of greetings with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, the US State Department has weighed in, stating that such interactions are standard in international relations. This comment came after China expressed its disapproval of Modi's congratulatory dialogue with Taiwan's newly elected President, highlighting the ongoing tension between China's territorial claims and Taiwan's international engagements.

US Backs Modi-Lai Exchange

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed the issue during his daily news conference on Thursday, emphasizing that congratulatory messages among foreign leaders are commonplace in diplomatic affairs. This statement was in direct response to queries about China's protest against Modi's remarks on seeking closer ties with Taiwan following his recent electoral victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

The exchange that sparked controversy occurred when President Lai Ching-te, who assumed office last month, extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Modi via a post on X. Lai expressed his anticipation for an enhanced partnership between Taiwan and India, focusing on trade, technology, and contributions towards peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Modi reciprocated with a message of gratitude towards Lai, expressing eagerness for a closer relationship and a mutually beneficial economic and technological partnership.

China's stance on Taiwan remains firm, viewing the island as a rebel province that must be reintegrated with the mainland, by force if necessary. Following the interaction between Modi and Lai, China reiterated its opposition to any form of official engagement between Taiwan and nations that have diplomatic ties with China. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, during a media briefing on Thursday, underscored that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory.

This incident underscores the complex web of diplomatic relations in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting the delicate balance countries navigate in their interactions with China and Taiwan. The US State Department's remarks reflect an understanding of these dynamics, suggesting that exchanges like those between Modi and Lai are part of routine diplomatic conduct rather than provocations.
