US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Bangladesh's Yunus Reaffirm Commitment to Human Rights

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan recently engaged in discussions with Bangladesh's interim Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus. Both leaders emphasised their dedication to upholding human rights for all individuals. Sullivan expressed gratitude towards Yunus for his leadership during these challenging times in Bangladesh.

Sullivan and Yunus Commit to Human Rights

The US government highlighted that both leaders are committed to safeguarding the rights of people, irrespective of their religious beliefs. Sullivan reaffirmed the US's support for a stable and democratic Bangladesh, offering continued assistance to address the nation's challenges.

Commitment to Human Rights

Yunus assumed the role of chief adviser on August 8, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled to India amid significant anti-government protests. The transition has been marked by incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities, including attacks on temples.

The White House announced on December 13 that President Joe Biden is closely observing the situation in Bangladesh. The US intends to hold the interim government accountable for protecting religious and ethnic minorities.

Security Concerns and Diplomatic Tensions

John Kirby, White House National Security Communications Advisor, noted that the security situation in Bangladesh has been tense since Hasina's departure. Meanwhile, Bangladesh's interim government has sent a diplomatic note to India, requesting Hasina's extradition. This move could potentially strain relations between the two nations.

The ongoing developments underscore the importance of international cooperation in ensuring stability and human rights protection in Bangladesh. The US remains committed to supporting Bangladesh through this transitional period.
