US Military Forces Positioned in the Middle East as Tensions Rise Between Israel and Hezbollah

The United States has maintained a significant military presence in the Middle East over the past year. This includes around 40,000 troops, numerous warships, and four Air Force fighter jet squadrons. The aim is to protect allies and deter potential attacks, according to several US officials. Recent escalations between Israel and Hezbollah have raised concerns about a broader conflict, even as Israel continues its operations against Hamas in Gaza.

US Military Readiness Amid Rising Tensions

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has announced a "new phase" in the conflict, focusing on the northern front against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite these developments, the US has not indicated any plans to increase troop numbers or alter its current deployment. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh stated, "We're confident in the ability that we have there right now to protect our forces and should we need to come to the defense of Israel as well."

US Military Resources and Operations

The US military's enhanced presence supports various operations, including defending Israel and countering threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. These rebels have targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea and launched missiles at Israel. A military official noted that additional resources have been beneficial for patrolling conflict areas, including operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Typically, around 34,000 US troops are stationed under US Central Command across the Middle East. This number increased to approximately 40,000 with additional ships and aircraft during the early months of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Recently, troop levels peaked at nearly 50,000 when two aircraft carriers were ordered to remain in the region amid rising tensions between Israel and Lebanon.

Naval Forces and Aircraft Deployment

Currently, one aircraft carrier remains in the region after previous deployments saw two carriers present simultaneously. The USS Abraham Lincoln is stationed in the Gulf of Oman with three destroyers. Two US Navy destroyers are positioned in the Red Sea. The USS Georgia guided missile submarine is also within US Central Command but its exact location is undisclosed.

Six US warships are deployed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, including the USS Wasp amphibious assault ship with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard. Additionally, three Navy destroyers are operating in this area. Some F/A-18 fighter jets from the USS Abraham Lincoln have been relocated to a land base within the region.

The Air Force has bolstered its presence by adding an extra squadron of advanced F-22 fighter jets last month. This brings the total number of land-based fighter squadrons in the Middle East to four. These include A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft, F-15E Strike Eagles, and F-16 fighter jets. The specific countries hosting these planes remain undisclosed.

The addition of F-22 jets provides a stealthy aircraft equipped with advanced sensors for electronic attacks and air defence suppression. The F-22 can also coordinate other warplanes during operations. In February, two B-1 bombers demonstrated long-range capabilities by flying from Texas to strike targets linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force in Iraq and Syria.

US officials provided these details anonymously due to security concerns surrounding troop movements and locations.
