US Likely to Halt Gaza Pier Reinstallation Amidst Operational Challenges

The US is contemplating halting efforts to reinstall a pier used for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to two US officials. The White House and the Defence Department announced that the pier would cease operations "soon" but did not provide a specific timeline. Other officials indicated that the Pentagon and US Central Command are discussing an early end due to weather and maintenance issues.

US May Stop Gaza Pier Project

Challenges in Aid Delivery

Officials, speaking anonymously, mentioned that no final decision has been made yet. They noted that if the weather improves, there might be a slim chance of reattaching the pier temporarily. Initially, the plan was to reinstall the pier for a few days to move the last pallets of aid onto the shore before removing it permanently. However, rough seas have hindered this effort.

Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, stated that US military personnel "were unable to re-anchor the pier to the shore" as planned this week. He added, "The pier will soon cease operations," without providing a specific timeline. Some aid remains offshore and in Cyprus, with officials considering alternative plans to transport it to the Israeli port at Ashdod.

Alternative Plans and Successes

The port of Ashdod is being considered as a replacement option for moving supplies from Cyprus to Gaza. Despite the challenges with the pier, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan deemed the project successful. "Look, I see any result that produces more food, more humanitarian goods, getting to the people of Gaza as a success," Sullivan said.

Sullivan further explained that the main issue now is not about getting aid into Gaza but effectively distributing it within Gaza. He remarked on Thursday during the NATO summit in Washington, "I do anticipate that in relatively short order we will wind down pier operations." The project has successfully delivered over 19.4 million pounds (8.6 million kilograms) of aid to Gaza's residents amid ongoing conflict.

Weather and Security Issues

The continuing weather problems have forced the military to temporarily remove the pier three times since its installation in May. Security threats have also hampered the project, causing aid agencies to halt distribution of food and other supplies into Gaza. Aid had accumulated in a secure area on the beach until recently when contractors hired by the World Food Programme moved it into storage areas for further distribution.

The Pentagon maintained that the pier—an Army system known as Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS)—was always intended as a temporary solution. Distribution through land routes has been considered optimal but has faced blockages by Israeli forces at various times.

Ryder highlighted that the total amount of aid delivered "represents the largest amount of aid transported by the US military over a three-month period and the largest humanitarian response in the Middle East region." This underscores the scale and impact of the mission despite its challenges.

The mission has faced numerous obstacles, including rough seas and security threats, but it has managed to deliver essential aid to those in need in Gaza. As discussions continue about ending pier operations, alternative methods for delivering aid are being explored to ensure continued support for Gaza's residents.
