Mississippi state troopers reported that the accident critically injured the driver, identified as 55-year-old Tina Wilson of Roebuck, South Carolina, and one student. Both were airlifted to hospitals for urgent medical attention. Additionally, nine other students sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to receive medical care.

The incident unfolded when the bus's tire blew, causing the vehicle to strike a center concrete barrier. Bay St. Louis Police Chief Toby Schwartz recounted the dramatic moments following the collision, highlighting Wilson's heroic efforts to regain control of the bus. Despite being ejected when the windshield blew out, Wilson managed to prevent the bus from flipping, an action that Schwartz believes saved many lives.

Paul Clune, a student on board, also played a crucial role in averting further disaster by taking control of the steering wheel until the bus came to a stop nearly half a mile later. The quick thinking and bravery displayed by Wilson and Clune were instrumental in preventing casualties.

The uninjured passengers were safely transported to another location before continuing their journey to New Orleans. The crash led to significant delays on the interstate for several hours as investigations commenced.

The bus involved in the accident is owned by Dixon Motor Xpress of Chester, South Carolina. Todd Dixon, the owner, described the incident as a "freak thing" and emphasized the company's commitment to safety. Since its establishment in 2019, Dixon Motor Xpress has maintained a satisfactory safety rating from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, with no accidents reported in the two years preceding this incident.

Dixon lauded Wilson's experience and instincts as a driver, attributing her actions during the crisis to her years of safe driving practice. The company prides itself on its rigorous maintenance standards and dedication to passenger safety.

This unfortunate event underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance and driver preparedness in ensuring the safety of passengers during unforeseen circumstances on the road.
