UN Rights Chief Concerned by Detentions, Force in Venezuela Crackdown

The United Nations' top human rights official voiced concerns on Tuesday about arbitrary detentions and excessive force in Venezuela. Security forces have been cracking down following the disputed presidential election. President Nicolás Maduro's loyalists have detained over 2,000 individuals for protesting or questioning his claim of winning a third term on July 28, despite evidence suggesting he lost by a significant margin.

UN Concerned Over Venezuela Crackdown

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated, "It is especially troubling that so many people are being detained, accused or charged either with incitement to hatred or under counterterrorism legislation." He emphasised that criminal law should not be used to unduly restrict freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.

Opposition Plans Demonstration

Venezuela's opposition is preparing for a demonstration on Saturday to increase pressure on Maduro to acknowledge defeat and negotiate a political transition. Opposition leader María Corina Machado commented, "If Maduro makes a realistic evaluation of his options, he'll understand that digging in is not sustainable." She spoke at a virtual press conference from an undisclosed location due to safety concerns.

Machado has appointed retired diplomat Edmundo González as her stand-in after being banned from running in the presidential campaign. She cautioned against expecting a quick resolution to the political crisis, saying, "Nobody knows how long it will take, but without a doubt there are painful days that await us."

Human Rights Violations

The U.N. human rights office reported that many detainees have not been allowed to appoint lawyers of their choice or contact their families. "Some of these cases would amount to enforced disappearances," the office stated. Türk called for the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained individuals and fair trial guarantees for all detainees.

Türk also highlighted the disproportionate use of force by law enforcement and attacks on demonstrators by armed government supporters, some resulting in deaths. He stressed that such actions must not be repeated. Additionally, Türk acknowledged reports of violence against public officials and buildings by some demonstrators, stating that violence is never the answer.

International Monitoring

On Monday, International Criminal Court prosecutors announced they are "actively monitoring" events in Venezuela. This statement underscores the international community's concern over the situation in the country.

The U.N.'s call for action comes as Venezuela faces increasing internal and external pressure to address human rights abuses and political instability. The ongoing crisis has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for reform from various global entities.
