UN Peacekeepers Begin Withdrawal from Eastern Congo
Amid escalating violence in eastern Congo, UN peacekeepers have initiated a phased withdrawal by handing over their first military base in Kamanyola to Congolese national police, as part of an agreement reached between the government and the UN last year.
In a significant development, United Nations peacekeepers have initiated the handover of their first military base to security forces in eastern Congo, marking the commencement of a gradual withdrawal after decades of operations in the country. This transition takes place against the backdrop of escalating violence in the conflict-ridden region.

Handover of Kamanyola Base
The peacekeepers transferred responsibility and equipment at their base in Kamanyola, South Kivu province, to Congo's national police. This handover forms part of a phased drawdown mutually agreed upon between the Congolese government and the U.N. last year.
Decades-Long Conflict in Eastern Congo
Eastern Congo has long been plagued by the presence of numerous armed groups vying for control over the region's rich mineral resources, including gold. The U.N. has maintained a presence in the country for 25 years, with its primary mission being the protection of civilians.
Frustration Among Congolese Citizens
Despite the U.N.'s efforts, many Congolese citizens express frustration, feeling that they remain vulnerable to rebel attacks. This discontent has led to protests against the U.N. mission, some of which have turned deadly.
U.N. Security Council's Decision
In light of these challenges, the U.N. Security Council extended the peacekeeping mandate until December 2023 and set troop level ceilings. The mission is tasked with closing 14 bases and facilities in South Kivu by June, after which the Security Council will determine the timeline for the remainder of the withdrawal.
Escalating Violence and M23 Rebel Group
The drawdown occurs amidst a surge in violence in recent weeks, primarily driven by the activities of the M23 rebel group. The M23, allegedly linked to Rwanda, resurfaced over two years ago after nearly a decade of dormancy. Its fighters have been accused of seizing territories, displacing thousands of people, and causing a severe humanitarian crisis.
U.N. Support for Congolese Army
The U.N. emphasizes its support for Congo's army by defending positions that safeguard civilians. Despite coming under fire, these positions remain intact.
Mixed Reactions from the Population
The handover of the Kamanyola base elicited mixed reactions from the local population. While some praised the U.N. mission for its contributions to peace-building, others believed it was time for Congolese security forces to assume responsibility for protecting the country. Some expressed disappointment with the perceived lack of progress despite decades of foreign involvement.
As the U.N. peacekeepers initiate their withdrawal from eastern Congo, the country faces the challenge of addressing the ongoing violence and ensuring the protection of its citizens. The handover of the Kamanyola base marks a significant step in this transition, and the coming months will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of peace and security in the region.
