UN Peacekeepers Report Severe Violations by Israel on Alpha Line with Syria Amid Ongoing Construction

The United Nations peacekeepers have raised concerns about Israel's military activities along the Alpha Line, which separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria. The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), monitoring the area since 1974, highlighted "severe violations" of a ceasefire agreement. This follows reports showing extensive construction by Israel in the region.

UN Warns of Violations on Alpha Line

UNDOF has been observing these developments closely, noting that the construction began in July. The Israeli military has completed new roads and what appears to be a buffer zone along the Gaza Strip's border with Israel. Similar activities are occurring in Lebanon, where other UN peacekeepers have faced attacks. Although violence hasn't erupted along the Alpha Line, UNDOF warns that these actions could heighten regional tensions.

Construction Activities and Regional Tensions

Israel's construction efforts involve significant engineering work, with earth-moving equipment protected by armoured vehicles and tanks. Troops and machinery have crossed into the demilitarised zone in Syria, known as the "area of separation" to UNDOF. The peacekeepers stated, "Violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement have occurred where engineering works have encroached into the AOS."

Israel has justified its actions as defensive measures to prevent unauthorised crossings by civilians. In June, Israel sent a detailed letter to the UN outlining alleged Syrian violations of the Alpha Line. This letter cited numerous instances of Syrian civilians crossing into Israeli-controlled areas.

Historical Context and International Reactions

The Golan Heights, seized by Israel during the 1967 Mideast war, remains a contentious area. In 1981, Israel annexed this territory, a move condemned by a UN resolution as "null and void." The region is strategically important due to its high ground overlooking both Israel and Syria.

Approximately 50,000 people reside in the Golan Heights, including Jewish settlers and Arabs, primarily from the Druze sect of Shiite Islam. In 2019, then-President Donald Trump announced US recognition of Israeli control over the territory. This decision remains unchanged under President Joe Biden's administration but is not supported by other countries.

UNDOF's Role and Observations

UNDOF has around 1,100 troops from countries like Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, and Uruguay patrolling a demilitarised zone established after the 1973 Mideast war. The Bravo Line marks where Syrian military operations are restricted. Despite repeated protests from UNDOF about Israel's construction activities violating ceasefire agreements, tensions continue to simmer.

Syria has consistently accused Israel of launching attacks from occupied territories in the Golan Heights. These accusations have intensified following recent conflicts in the Middle East. However, Israeli officials have not commented on these latest developments.

The situation in the Golan Heights remains complex and fraught with historical grievances and geopolitical tensions. As construction continues along the Alpha Line, international attention is focused on how these actions might impact regional stability.
