Zelenskyy Claims North Korean Troops May Join Russia in Ukraine Conflict, Heightening Global Tensions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that North Korean troops might join Russian forces in Ukraine soon. This development could escalate the ongoing conflict, which has lasted nearly three years. Western officials have expressed concerns about the geopolitical impact, especially in regions like the Indo-Pacific.

Zelenskyy Warns of North Korean Troop Involvement

The White House's national security spokesman, John Kirby, stated that security advisers from the US, Japan, and South Korea have met to discuss these developments. They are urging Russia and North Korea to halt actions that could expand the war's implications beyond Europe. Kirby mentioned that over 3,000 North Korean troops might be in Russia for training and outfitting.

North Korean Troop Deployment

Kirby noted that while there is no firm intelligence on their exact deployment, some troops might head to Russia's Kursk region. This area has seen Ukrainian control since August. However, Kirby admitted uncertainty about the roles these troops would play. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported North Korean units in Kursk as of Wednesday.

According to GUR, these soldiers underwent weeks of training in eastern Russia and received winter gear. They estimate around 12,000 North Korean soldiers are involved, including 500 officers and three generals. However, GUR did not provide evidence for these claims.

International Reactions

Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans shared on social platform X that intelligence suggests North Korean troops will likely first appear in Kursk. The deployment under a military agreement between Moscow and Pyongyang adds a new layer to Europe's largest conflict since World War II.

Zelenskyy previously mentioned intelligence indicating 10,000 North Korean troops preparing to join Russian forces. He warned that another nation entering the conflict could escalate it into a "world war." North Korea has already supplied ammunition to Russia under a defense pact.

Diplomatic Tensions

A senior Ukrainian official revealed that Zelenskyy canceled UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' planned visit to Kyiv. This decision followed Guterres' attendance at a BRICS summit in Kazan, where he was photographed with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The image caused an uproar in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy posted on Telegram that Ukrainian intelligence believes North Korean troops will be used by Russia between Sunday and Monday. He described this as an "obvious escalating move by Russia" but did not provide further details on troop deployment locations.

Russia has been conducting intense operations along Ukraine's eastern front but struggles to reclaim its Kursk border region after a recent incursion. The US called the deployment of 3,000 North Korean troops to Russia a serious move.

While Putin seeks support from BRICS nations, he has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of North Korean troops in Russia. The involvement of North Korean forces complicates an already tense international situation, with most Western countries backing Kyiv against Moscow's aggression.
