UK Visa Rule Change: Setback For Indians As Families Barred From Joining Foreign Students In The UK
New visa restrictions that effectively prevent most international students from bringing their family members to the UK have been implemented by the UK government, led by British home secretary James Cleverly. This change, which came into effect on Monday, January 1, 2024, would apply to all foreign students except those enrolled in postgraduate research courses or government-funded scholarship programs.
A significant number of Indian students, constituting the largest group of international students in the UK, are expected to be impacted by this new law. The majority in the student visa category is formed by Indian nationals, accounting for 43 percent of those granted permission to stay under this route. The previous allowance for overseas students to bring their families has been described by Cleverly as an "unreasonable practice." He mentioned that this new policy is anticipated to result in a significant reduction in migration numbers by tens of thousands.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, UK PM Rishi Sunak wrote, " From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK. In 2024, we're already delivering for the British people."
New UK Visa Restrictions for International Students' Dependents: All you need to know
The measures, initially announced in May by his predecessor Suella Braverman, have been implemented in the wake of net migration figures reaching 672,000. Starting January 1, 2024, visas for dependants are no longer available for international students commencing their studies in Britain, except for those pursuing postgraduate research or on a government-sponsored course.
Financial Impact on Universities and Concerns for UK's Global Education Standing
The new limitations on dependents accompanying international students to the UK, announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Twitter, might impact universities financially as they depend on the revenue from fees paid by these students. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the potential negative effect on the UK's standing as a global education destination.
Government's Commitment to Migration Reduction
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the change on Twitter, stating that the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK from today. He added that this move demonstrates the government's commitment to "delivering for the British people" in 2024. Home Secretary James Cleverly further commented on the government's commitment to cutting migration and implementing a tough plan throughout the year.
Mixed Reactions and Defense of Policy
The policy has faced criticism for potentially separating families and causing uncertainty about their future. However, the Home Office defends the new package as a "tough but fair" approach, balancing the attraction of top international talent with the integrity of the UK's immigration system. Labour Party shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper supports the restrictions but argues they are insufficient to address broader issues in the UK labor market and economy.
Scale of Impact
In the year ending September 2023, 152,980 visas were issued to dependents of students, highlighting the potential scale of impact of this new policy.
