UK Election: Nabanita Sircar Decodes The Factors Behind Conservative Party's Downfall And Labour's Rise

In an exclusive interview with OneIndia, senior journalist Nabanita Sircar from London shared her insights on the UK general election results 2024 and the implications for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's leadership. According to Sircar, the factors that contributed to the Conservative Party's downfall include Truss's mismanagement of the UK economy, public frustration with the party, and internal conflicts.

When asked if the constant change in leadership from Boris to Truss to Sunak contributed to the loss, Sircar responded, "Absolutely. The Conservatives lacked popular support. Even extreme right-wingers like Suella Braverman won seats. Sunak lacked experience as PM, faced opposition from Boris's camp, and his personality wasn't well-received. His campaign was considered lackluster, even asking Labour not to aim for a 'super majority'."

Regarding Keir Starmer's impact on EU relations post-Brexit, Sircar said that Starmer has stated he won't reverse Brexit, but his stance may evolve, especially with the Liberal Democrats gaining nearly 70 seats in Parliament. This could potentially influence future EU relations.

Sircar highlighted that Starmer will face several challenges in implementing his agenda, including restoring voter trust, fulfilling election promises, establishing an anti-corruption commission to address Tory misconduct, fixing the economy, improving EU relations, and potentially lowering the voting age to 16.

On Keir Starmer's views on specific issues, Sircar noted that while he has expressed support for Ukraine, his stance on Israel is more nuanced. He supports a two-state solution, which may have alienated some Muslim voters who traditionally support Labour. On India and PM Modi, Sircar believes that while Indian viewers have shifted towards conservative voices, Starmer is likely to address human rights issues. However, Labour is not expected to create significant problems for India in terms of bilateral relations.
