UAW members approve new contract with General Motors
UAW members have voted to approve a new contract with General Motors, making the company the first Detroit automaker to get a ratified deal that could end a contentious labour dispute and a series of crippling strikes.
In a significant development, members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union have voted in favor of a new contract with General Motors (GM). This agreement makes GM the first Detroit automaker to secure a ratified deal, potentially bringing an end to a contentious labor dispute marked by crippling strikes.
Voting Results and Reactions

According to the vote-tracking spreadsheet on the UAW's website, the contract passed by a narrow margin, with 54.7% of votes in favor. This outcome was closer than expected, considering the UAW's previous celebrations of victories on key demands during targeted walkouts against GM, Ford, and Stellantis.
At Ford and Stellantis, the contract had a significant lead in voting. As of Thursday, ratification was leading at Ford by more than 10,000 votes, with 66.7% of ballots in favor. Similarly, at Stellantis, the lead exceeded 5,700 votes, with 66.5% supporting the deal. Voting at Ford will continue until early Saturday, with only two large factories in the Detroit area and a few smaller facilities yet to be counted. At Stellantis, three Detroit-area factories are the only major plants yet to vote, with results expected by Tuesday.
If approved by the 146,000 union members, the three contracts would result in a substantial increase in pay for autoworkers. The proposed deal includes raises and cost-of-living adjustments that would translate into a 33% wage gain over the contract's duration. Top assembly plant workers would receive immediate 11% raises, eventually earning roughly $42 per hour when the contracts expire in April 2028.
However, not all GM workers were pleased with the outcome. At GM, approximately 46,000 workers were eligible to vote on the deal, and around 36,000 cast ballots. Among the four GM plants that went on strike, only workers at a large SUV plant in Arlington, Texas, approved the contract. Workers in Wentzville, Missouri; Lansing Delta Township, Michigan; and Spring Hill, Tennessee, voted it down.
Some workers expressed dissatisfaction, stating that longtime employees at GM did not receive larger pay raises compared to newer workers. They also desired a more significant increase in pension benefits. Andrea Repasky, a body shop worker at GM's pickup truck factory in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, who voted against the deal, felt that the pay increase could have been better considering her 17 years of service.
Addressing Concerns and Moving Forward
Keith Crowell, the local union president at GM's Arlington SUV plant, acknowledged the diverse workforce at the factory, including full-time and part-time temporary hires alongside longtime assembly line employees. While some workers appreciated the substantial raises and the opportunity to reach top union pay, many long-term employees felt that the immediate pay raises were insufficient to compensate for concessions made to GM in 2008.
During that time, the union agreed to lower pay for new hires and gave up cost-of-living adjustments and general annual pay raises to assist the automakers. Despite these concessions, GM and Stellantis, then known as Chrysler, eventually went into government-funded bankruptcies.
UAW President Shawn Fain emphasized the need to rectify the concessions made in 2008, citing the automakers' strong profits. President Joe Biden praised the resolution of the strike as an early victory for a worker-centered economy. However, the ultimate success of the tentative contracts hinges on the automakers' ability to maintain profitability as they transition towards electric vehicles in a competitive market.
Thousands of UAW members joined picket lines in targeted strikes starting on September 15 before the tentative deals were reached late last month. Instead of striking at one company, the union strategically targeted individual plants at all three automakers. At its peak, approximately 46,000 of the union's 146,000 workers at the Detroit companies were walking picket lines.
The ratified contract takes steps toward eliminating lower wage tiers for newer hires, reducing the number of years required to reach top pay. Many newer hires had advocated for defined benefit pension plans instead of 401k retirement plans, but the companies agreed to contribute 10% per year into 401k plans as an alternative.
The approval of the new contract with GM marks a significant milestone in the ongoing labor dispute within the U.S. automotive industry. As the other two automakers, Ford and Stellantis, continue their voting process, the outcome will determine the fate of the tentative agreements reached last month. The successful ratification of these contracts will pave the way for improved wages and benefits for autoworkers, while also ensuring the long-term viability of the domestic auto industry.
