Trump Breaks Silence on Navalnys Death With No Mention Of Putin

More than three days after the passing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in an Arctic penal colony, former President Donald Trump finally mentioned him by name in a post on his social media platform. However, instead of focusing on Navalny, Trump used the opportunity to draw attention to his own legal troubles.

Biden and Western Leaders Blame Putin

President Joe Biden and other Western leaders have expressed anger and demanded answers from Russian President Vladimir Putin, holding him responsible for the 47-year-old's death. In contrast, Trump's post on Monday morning made no mention of Putin or Navalny's family. Instead, he portrayed himself as a victim and depicted the United States as a nation in decline.

Trump's Post Draws Criticism

Trump's post sparked immediate criticism from his political rivals, including Nikki Haley, his last remaining challenger in the Republican nominating contest. Haley, who has been increasingly critical of Trump, accused him of stealing a page from the liberals' playbook by denouncing America and comparing it to Russia. She further accused Trump of siding with Putin, whom she labeled a dictator who kills his political opponents.

Trump's History of Russia-Related Controversies

Trump has faced criticism for nearly a decade for his refusal to denounce Putin and his frequent complimentary statements about the Russian leader. During his presidency, Trump drew outrage when he openly questioned the findings of his own intelligence agencies regarding Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. election to help him win. He seemed to accept Putin's insistence that Moscow was innocent.

This month, Trump caused another uproar when he revealed that he had once warned a NATO ally that he would "encourage" Russia "to do whatever the hell they want" to countries in the alliance that did not spend enough on defense.

Navalny's Widow Accuses Putin

Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny's widow, has accused Putin of killing her husband in a remote prison and refusing to release his body as part of a cover-up. Russian authorities claim that the cause of Navalny's death on Friday remains unknown and is the subject of a new investigation. However, these findings are likely to be met with skepticism.

Trump's Reference to "Sudden Death"

Trump's reference to Navalny's "sudden death" was particularly noteworthy. According to Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, prison officials allegedly informed Navalny's mother upon her arrival at the penal colony on Saturday that her son had died from "sudden death syndrome."

Navalny had been imprisoned since January 2021 after returning to Moscow following treatment for nerve agent poisoning, which he attributed to the Kremlin.
