Trump Inauguration: New President Promises a Golden Age for America Amidst Economic Challenges

Donald Trump, who has navigated impeachments, criminal charges, and assassination attempts, is set to be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. His swearing-in ceremony, initially planned outdoors, was moved inside due to severe cold. The event began with a service at St. John's Episcopal Church. Republicans now have unified control of Washington and aim to reshape national institutions.

Trumps Vision for a Golden Age in America

Trump's inauguration coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, marking the third time a president has been sworn in on this federal holiday. Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama also took their oaths on this day for their second terms. The holiday, established nearly 40 years ago, is observed on the third Monday of January each year.

Inflation and Economic Plans

Trump pledged to tackle what he termed "record inflation." Inflation reached 9.1% in June 2022 but decreased to 2.9% by December. However, historical data shows higher rates, like over 14% in 1980 according to the Federal Reserve. Trump plans executive orders to address inflation and reduce prices.

Among Trump's proposed executive orders are several focused on immigration. These include declaring a national emergency at the southern border and reinstating the "remain in Mexico" policy. He also aims to end what he calls an "electric vehicle mandate" and declare a "national energy emergency" to boost energy production.

Inauguration Ceremony Highlights

The inauguration ceremony began with speeches emphasising American democracy's resilience as the nation nears its 250th anniversary. Sen. Amy Klobuchar highlighted the enduring power of democracy grounded in law, while Sen. Deb Fischer echoed these sentiments, noting democracy's promise of change and destiny shaping.

Trump's inaugural address echoed his campaign themes, including grievances about those who tried to "take my freedom" and the "weaponisation of our Justice Department." He reiterated claims about illegal immigrants coming from prisons and mental institutions, despite lacking evidence for such assertions.

Executive Orders and Immigration

Trump's executive orders received mixed reactions during his speech. Declaring a state of emergency at the southern border garnered applause from Republicans and some Democrats like Reps. Don Davis and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. Trump also vowed to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream a reality during his administration.

In his speech, Trump declared that America's decline is over, attributing his survival from an assassination attempt to divine intervention meant to "make America great again." He claimed a mandate from the election to reverse what he described as a betrayal against Americans' faith, wealth, democracy, and freedom.

Swearing-In Traditions

During his swearing-in ceremony, Trump used both his personal Bible and the Lincoln Bible. The Lincoln Bible was first used during Abraham Lincoln's 1861 inauguration when his family Bible was unavailable. Barack Obama also used it during his first inauguration in 2009.

The ceremony concluded with cheers in the Rotunda as Trump was officially sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts for a second term as president. Trump's family joined him on stage, celebrating this significant moment together.

The day marked a new chapter for America under Trump's leadership as he promised that "the golden age of America begins right now." He expressed confidence that from this day forward, the country would flourish and regain global respect.
