Israeli Airstrike Targets Hezbollah Leader, Resulting in 37 Fatalities in Beirut

An Israeli airstrike on a Beirut apartment building resulted in the death of a senior Hezbollah leader and approximately 12 other members of the group, according to Israel's military. Lebanon reported that the attack's death toll reached 37, including women and children. The strike occurred during a Friday afternoon rush, flattening an eight-story building in southern Beirut where Hezbollah members were meeting.

Israeli Strike Kills Hezbollah Leader in Beirut

Rescue teams were busy retrieving bodies from the debris of the collapsed building on Saturday. Meanwhile, Israel and Hezbollah continued exchanging fire across the border. According to local media, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah retaliated with rocket attacks on Israel. Lebanon's Health Minister, Firass Abiad, stated that seven women and three children were among those killed.

Hezbollah Leaders Targeted

The Israeli military identified Ibrahim Akil as one of those killed. Akil was a top Hezbollah official who led the group's special forces unit, the Radwan Force. Another high-ranking commander, Ahmed Wahbi, also died in the attack. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the strike disrupted Hezbollah's command structure by eliminating Akil, who was responsible for Israeli casualties.

Akil had been wanted by the United States for his alleged involvement in the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut and hostage-taking incidents in Lebanon during the 1980s. The US State Department had offered a reward for information leading to his capture. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan described Akil's death as "a good outcome," noting his role in past attacks against Americans.

Continued Cross-Border Tensions

The airstrike followed one of Hezbollah's most intense bombardments of northern Israel in nearly a year, targeting Israeli military sites. Most rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system. The militant group claimed its rocket barrage was a response to Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon. However, it came after explosions involving Hezbollah communication devices killed at least 37 people.

Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani reported that 16 Hezbollah fighters died in Friday's strike. Meanwhile, Lebanese troops secured the area around the destroyed building as rescue workers continued their efforts. The building on Qaim Street housed 16 apartments and was severely damaged along with nearby structures.

Safety Measures and Escalation

Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israeli defence spokesperson, announced new safety measures for northern Israel due to expected rocket attacks. These include limits on gatherings and guidelines for work and school activities. In practice, these measures could lead to school closures in some areas since reaching shelters quickly may not be feasible.

Israel's security cabinet recently declared stopping Hezbollah's attacks on its north as an official war goal. This decision could lead to a broader military operation in Lebanon, potentially escalating into full-scale conflict. Israel has deployed significant forces to its northern border in response.

Hezbollah has stated it will cease its attacks only if a ceasefire is established in Gaza. Since Hamas' assault on southern Israel on October 7 triggered an intense Israeli offensive in Gaza, cross-border exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah have become frequent but mostly targeted evacuated areas.

Iran's armed forces unveiled a new ballistic missile capable of reaching Israel during an annual military parade in Tehran. The United States claims Iran's missile development violates a UN Security Council resolution prohibiting activities related to nuclear-capable ballistic missiles.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue their military actions without any immediate resolution in sight.
