Three US Army Soldiers Arrested for Alleged Human Smuggling Along the Mexico Border

Three soldiers from Fort Cavazos, Texas, have been detained on charges of human smuggling. U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas announced the arrests on Thursday. The soldiers involved are Emilio Mendoza Lopez, Angel Palma, 20, and Enrique Jauregui, 25. They were apprehended following a traffic stop in Presidio, near the Mexico border, approximately 500 miles southwest of Dallas.

US Army Soldiers Arrested for Human Smuggling

During the stop on November 27, law enforcement discovered that Palma was allegedly driving a vehicle carrying Mendoza Lopez and two Guatemalan nationals. The authorities suspect that Mendoza Lopez and Palma traveled from Fort Cavazos to Presidio to transport undocumented individuals. Jauregui is believed to have played a role as a recruiter and facilitator in this smuggling operation.

Investigation Details

Data obtained from Palma's phone through a search warrant revealed messages among the three soldiers, suggesting their involvement in the smuggling scheme. Mendoza Lopez was taken into custody at the scene of the traffic stop. Meanwhile, Palma reportedly fled but was later arrested alongside Jauregui at Fort Cavazos on Tuesday.

Mike Lahrman, spokesperson for Esparza, stated he was unaware of the soldiers' ranks or any military actions against them. A representative from Fort Cavazos did not immediately provide comments regarding the situation.

Legal Proceedings

Mendoza Lopez's lawyer, Shane Chriesman, mentioned he is waiting for more information from prosecutors to build a defense strategy. "Once I get discovery and have a chance to assess the case we'll develop a plan of attack," Chriesman said. He aims to secure bail for Mendoza Lopez, who remains jailed without bond.

No legal representatives are listed for Palma and Jauregui in jail records. They are scheduled for their initial court appearance on Friday, according to Esparza.
