Syria Launches Counterattacks Against Insurgents as Iran's Diplomat Meets with Assad
The Syrian military has intensified its efforts to reclaim Aleppo, the country's largest city, from insurgents. On Sunday, reinforcements were sent to the northwest, and airstrikes were launched. Iran has pledged support for Syria's government in this conflict. However, the specifics of Iran's assistance remain unclear. The insurgents, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, began their offensive on Wednesday, targeting Aleppo and surrounding areas.

In response to the insurgent advance, Syrian troops have established a "strong defensive line" in northern Hama. This move aims to halt the momentum of the insurgents, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Meanwhile, airstrikes have targeted Idlib and Aleppo, resulting in at least 15 casualties in opposition-held territories.
Regional Implications and International Reactions
The escalation in Syria threatens to open another volatile front in the Middle East. This comes amid ongoing conflicts involving Israel and Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. These tensions could potentially draw Russia and Turkey into direct confrontation over their interests in Syria.
The insurgents launched their offensive just as a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel took effect. This timing raised hopes for regional de-escalation. However, the surprise attack has embarrassed President Bashar Assad, whose allies are currently preoccupied with their own conflicts.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi assured Assad during a visit to Damascus that Tehran is prepared to assist Syria's counteroffensive efforts. Arab leaders like Jordan's King Abdullah II and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have also expressed solidarity with Assad.
Insurgent Advances and Strategic Gains
By Saturday, insurgents had captured most of Aleppo and made significant progress in the surrounding province. They seized control of the city's main water pumping station, which is now non-operational. Syrian Minister of Water Resources Moataz Qattan confirmed this development on Sham FM radio.
Rebel commander Col Hassan Abdulghani reported advances around Idlib, claiming full control over the province. Insurgents also claimed entry into Hama city, though independent verification is lacking.
In Idlib's Khan Sheikhoun area, abandoned military vehicles were visible along roads. Civilians posed for photos atop an abandoned tank while insurgents collected munitions before advancing further into Syria.
Impact on Civilians and Regional Security Concerns
The insurgents' push towards Damascus has not disrupted life in the capital. However, southeastern Aleppo faces gridlock as residents flee the conflict zone. Fuel shortages have been reported at local gas stations.
Rebels have also reached Tel Rifaat near Aleppo, held by US-backed Syrian Kurdish forces. This town is distant from northeastern areas controlled by Kurdish troops known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The insurgency has urged SDF forces to retreat to their northeastern strongholds.
Despite political differences with Syria's government, the Kurdish-led administration opposes the insurgency. They accuse Turkey of attempting to displace Kurds through its backing of opposition groups.
International Observations and Military Developments
Turkish officials indicated that a limited rebel offensive aimed to halt government attacks on opposition areas but expanded as government forces retreated. UN special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen warned that the rebel push poses regional security risks and called for renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan stated on CNN that America is closely monitoring developments. Approximately 900 US troops are stationed in northeastern Syria to prevent an Islamic State resurgence. The rebel group leading this advance is designated a terrorist organisation by the US.
"At the same time, of course, we don't cry over the fact that the Assad government, backed by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, are facing certain kinds of pressure," Sullivan added.
Military Actions and Casualty Reports
The Syrian army reportedly repelled insurgents in northern Hama overnight according to state news agency SANA and war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Government resupply included heavy equipment while airstrikes targeted weapon depots held by rebels.
SANA reported that nearly 1,000 insurgents were killed over three days without providing evidence or details. Airstrikes in Idlib killed at least three civilians including two children according to White Helmets operating in opposition-held areas.
Aleppo was also hit by airstrikes near a hospital killing 12 people including eight civilians according to White Helmets and Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports.
The 2016 battle for Aleppo marked a turning point when government forces regained control after losing ground post-2011 protests against Assad's rule escalated into war securing strategic areas while opposition factions remained on periphery supported by foreign backers.
