Suspect Camped with Rifle Near Trump Golf Course for 12 Hours Before Being Thwarted
A man suspected of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump camped outside a golf course for nearly 12 hours with food and a rifle. The potential attack was thwarted by a Secret Service agent who opened fire, according to court documents filed on Monday. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, faces charges of possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. The Justice Department has not alleged that he fired any shots.

Routh appeared briefly in federal court in West Palm Beach, initiating a criminal case amid an already tumultuous presidential race. Although no one was injured, this incident marks the second attempt on Trump's life in two months. This raises questions about the security measures in place for Trump during heightened political tensions. Both Republican allies and some Democrats are demanding answers on how such an incident could occur.
Details of the Incident
Authorities arrested Routh on Sunday afternoon after spotting a firearm poking out of shrubbery on the West Palm Beach golf course where Trump was playing. A Secret Service agent assigned to Trump's security detail opened fire, causing Routh to flee before being captured by law enforcement in a neighbouring county. Body camera footage posted by the Martin County Sheriff's Office showed Routh's arrest, where he was seen walking backward with his hands over his head before being handcuffed.
Routh is believed to have been positioned at the tree line of the golf course from about 1:59 am to 1:31 pm Sunday, according to an FBI affidavit citing cellphone data. A digital camera, a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope, and a plastic bag containing food were recovered from the area where Routh had been standing.
Political Reactions and Security Concerns
The incident has accelerated concerns about violence in American presidential politics. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the thwarted attack. Harris stated on X: "I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America." Attorney General Merrick Garland said, "We will work tirelessly to ensure accountability, and we will bring every available resource to bear in this investigation."
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that his state would conduct its own investigation into how Routh managed to get so close to Trump. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw noted that security protocols around the golf course had loosened because Trump is no longer in office. "He's not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had this entire golf course surrounded," Bradshaw told reporters.
Routh's Background and Legal Issues
Authorities have not revealed new details about Routh's background or alleged motive in charging documents. However, his online footprint suggests evolving political viewpoints and disdain for Trump. In his self-published 2023 book titled "Ukraine's Unwinnable War," Routh described Trump as a "fool" and "buffoon" for various actions, including the Capitol riots and leaving the Iran nuclear deal.
Routh once voted for Trump but later expressed regret, blaming himself for electing "a brainless child." He also tried to recruit fighters for Ukraine against Russia and had a website seeking funds and volunteers for Kyiv. Voter records show he registered as an unaffiliated voter in North Carolina in 2012 and most recently voted in the state's Democratic primary in March.
One charge against Routh alleges illegal possession of a gun despite multiple felony convictions, including two charges of possessing stolen goods in 2002 in North Carolina. The other charge involves having an obliterated serial number on the firearm, violating federal law.
Legal Proceedings
Routh was ordered held after prosecutors argued he was a flight risk, with additional hearings set for later this month. He spoke softly while answering questions from a federal magistrate, revealing that he earns around USD 3,000 monthly but has no savings or significant assets aside from two trucks worth about $1,000 each located in Hawaii. He also mentioned having a 25-year-old son whom he sometimes supports.
The arrest has brought fresh attention to the challenges of protecting Trump during campaign events and when he is off the trail at his clubs and properties. This incident follows a July shooting at a Pennsylvania campaign rally where Trump was wounded by a gunman's bullet.
The ongoing investigation may lead to additional charges as prosecutors seek an indictment from a grand jury. The situation underscores the need for stringent security measures during politically charged times.
The recent events highlight the complexities of ensuring safety for high-profile figures like Trump amidst escalating political rhetoric and violence concerns.
