Suella Braverman, a former UK home secretary, has switched allegiance to Reform UK, citing dissatisfaction with the Conservative Party's immigration policies. The 45-year-old MP of Goan descent, representing Fareham and Waterlooville, announced her departure from the Tories after three decades. At a London event, she was welcomed by Nigel Farage, the leader of the far-right Reform UK.

Braverman is the latest prominent Tory MP to join Farage, following ex-ministers Robert Jenrick and Nadhim Zahawi. This brings the total number of Conservative MPs who have defected to eight. She expressed her disillusionment with the Tories, stating, "I feel like I've come home... I'm calling time on Tory betrayal. I'm calling time on Tory lies. I'm calling time on a party that keeps making promises with zero intention of keeping them."

Braverman's Critique of Current Policies

Braverman criticised the current state of Britain, highlighting issues such as uncontrolled immigration and struggling public services. She remarked that people feel unsafe and young individuals are leaving for better opportunities abroad. "Britain is indeed broken. She is suffering. She is not well," she said, emphasising the need for change.

She further stated that the nation appears weak on the global stage and stressed the importance of reclaiming power and strength. "We can either continue down this route of managed decline to weakness and surrender or we can fix our country," she added.

Reactions to Braverman's Move

Nigel Farage expressed approval of Braverman's decision to defect, noting it was "about time" she joined Reform UK. He described her as someone who had achieved high office within the Cabinet. In response, Braverman praised Farage as "the only man in British politics who has been courageously consistent for his country."

The Conservative Party's initial reaction to Braverman's defection was controversial. They first attributed her decision to "mental health" issues but later revised their statement after backlash. The amended statement suggested it was inevitable that Braverman would leave.

Braverman's Political Journey

Braverman has been a notable figure on the extreme right of the Conservative Party and previously contested its leadership elections. Former prime ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss included her in their top teams. Her tenure as home secretary was marked by controversies, including two dismissals: one for breaching ministerial guidelines under Truss and another for contentious media comments under Rishi Sunak.

The Conservatives' revised statement implied that some MPs are motivated by community service while others pursue personal ambition. This comment seemed directed at Braverman's political ambitions.
