South Sudan Enforces Temporary Social Media Ban Due to Violence Against Nationals in Sudan
South Sudanese authorities have instructed telecom companies to block social media access for at least 30 days. This decision, effective from midnight Thursday, aims to curb the spread of disturbing content linked to violence against South Sudanese nationals in Sudan. The National Communication Authority (NCA) stated this measure is crucial for public safety and mental health, and it might extend up to 90 days if necessary.

The NCA highlighted that the graphic content circulating online violates local laws and poses a threat to public safety. Many South Sudanese are upset by videos allegedly showing militia groups killing South Sudanese in Gezira state, Sudan. The authorities may lift the ban once the situation stabilises.
Violence and Curfew in South Sudan
In response to retaliatory violence, South Sudan imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on January 17. This followed incidents where shops owned by Sudanese traders were looted. The unrest stems from ongoing conflicts in Sudan, which have led to widespread famine and displacement.
Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the African Union Commission, condemned the killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan. He called for restraint amid escalating tensions. The civil war in Sudan has resulted in severe humanitarian crises, with atrocities reported by the UN and rights groups.
Conflict Escalation in Sudan
Sudan's civil war intensified in April 2023 when fighting erupted between forces loyal to rival military leaders in Khartoum. The conflict has since spread to other regions, marked by ethnically motivated violence, including killings and rapes.
The ongoing violence has created one of the world's largest displacement crises. The situation remains dire as efforts continue to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict.
The directive from South Sudan's NCA reflects growing concerns about the impact of graphic content on social media. Authorities are keen to protect citizens from harmful material while working towards restoring stability in the region.
