Srivaikundam Sexual Assault: 2 TVK Functionaries Arrest On Rape Charges

A wave of anger has swept through Srivaikundam after the brutal sexual assault of a young woman seeking employment. The cops have arrested two TVK local leaders in connection with the incident.

Police say the suspects, Balamurugan and Jayapal, lured the victim with the promise of a job, gained her trust, and then took her to an isolated spot on the town's outskirts where she was allegedly held captive and gang‑raped, according to report in the Tamil media.

The survivor, showing remarkable courage, filed a complaint that led to the arrest of both men. They now face serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for kidnapping and gang‑rape, and have been remanded in judicial custody while investigations continue.

Preliminary findings suggest the accused exploited the woman's vulnerable situation by offering false employment opportunities. Police are gathering further evidence, including witness statements and forensic material, to strengthen the case.

Women's rights groups and social organisations have condemned the crime, warning of the dangers posed by fraudulent job offers. Residents have voiced concern that young women seeking work are increasingly at risk of exploitation under the guise of employment.

Because both men held local positions within a major political party, the fallout was immediate. Party leaders moved quickly to strip them of their titles and expel them permanently, stressing a zero‑tolerance stance on violence against women.

Opposition figures, however, accused the local political establishment of fostering a culture of impunity, arguing that the suspects felt shielded by their connections. They have demanded a transparent investigation and a fast‑tracked trial to ensure justice for the survivor.

Meanwhile, Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi has condemned the incident, describing it as "cowardice" to prey on a woman seeking honest work. She pledged that her party's state government would ensure the law takes its full course, regardless of political ties.

"No one, no matter their local political background, will be shielded from justice," she said, adding that the state is committed to providing the survivor with medical, emotional, and legal support throughout the trial.

Local residents are now calling for tighter security and safer environments for women seeking jobs, while state officials have promised that the case will be handled with urgency.
