Shocking Law: Wife beating, honour killing legalised in Afghanistan

Women
Kabul, Feb 6: What can be more pathetic for women when they are left to be tortured in a male dominated world. But when a law permits man to commit sin without the fear of being punished, women are vulnerable to experience wrath of men.

Similar situation has occurred in Afghanistan where domectic violence such as -- wife beating, honour killing and other crimes against women have been legalised.

The Gurdian on Thursday, Feb 6 reported that by changing a law, it will be impossible for anyone to testify against relatives.

Afghan Parliament reportedly passed this change in legislation and sent it to President Hamid Karzai. The president will sign the amendments to make it a law. It would allow men to attack their wives, children and sisters without the fear of punishment, the news report said.

Manizha Naderi, director of the charity Women for Afghan Women was quoted as saying, "It is a travesty this is happening. It will make it impossible to prosecute cases of violence against women. The most vulnerable people won't get justice now."

Here it can be mentioned that Afghanistan brought in the Elimination of Violence Against Women law in 2009. The law criminalised child marriage, selling and buying women to settle disputes, assault and other acts of violence and abuse against women.
