Central US Battled by Severe Storms; Tornadoes Injure Two in Kansas and Iowa

Severe storms swept through the central United States on Tuesday, unleashing tornadoes in Kansas and Iowa, causing significant damage and injuries. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado with winds reaching up to 100 mph (161 kph) struck near Richland, Kansas, early in the morning. This tornado was on the ground for approximately 20 minutes, leading to two individuals sustaining injuries when their RV was overturned by the powerful winds. The extent of their injuries was not immediately disclosed.

In addition to the human toll, the storm wreaked havoc on infrastructure, with buildings and trees damaged in Overbrook, a neighboring town to Richland. Central Iowa also felt the storm's fury as a tornado demolished a barn and damaged other structures in a rural part of Dallas County. Moreover, Bloomfield, located just north of the Missouri line, experienced ping pong ball-sized hail, although no injuries were reported there.

The weather service had warned that the central U.S. would face severe weather threats throughout Tuesday. Expected conditions included thunderstorms across Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and northwestern Illinois, with potential for large hail and damaging winds. Isolated storms were also forecasted for the mid-South region.

In a related incident attributed to the stormy conditions, American Eagle Flight 3661, bound for Chicago from Kansas City International Airport, was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to a possible lightning strike. American Airlines spokesperson Gianna Urgo confirmed that the aircraft was undergoing inspection for any potential damage. Affected passengers were accommodated on alternative flights.

Elsewhere in Missouri, near Smithville Lake in the western part of the state, a camper was overturned and a building lost its roof due to the strong storms. The Clay County Sheriff's Department also reported downed trees and power lines in several communities around Kansas City, highlighting the widespread impact of the severe weather across the region.
