Western Security Officials Suspect Russian Intelligence in Cargo Plane Incendiary Device Plot

Western security officials suspect Russian intelligence of attempting to place incendiary devices on cargo planes bound for North America. These incidents included fires at a courier hub in Germany and a warehouse in England. Poland recently arrested four individuals linked to foreign intelligence sabotage and is searching for two more. Lithuania's prosecutor general mentioned multiple detentions across several countries without providing further details.

Hybrid Warfare Intensifies

Western officials report an increase in Russia's hybrid warfare against Ukraine's allies, involving election disinformation and arson attacks in Europe. Several officials attribute these acts to Russian military intelligence, the GRU, though Moscow denies involvement. Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) notes increased incidents this year, believed to be coordinated by Russian special services.

In Poland, 20 individuals face charges related to sabotage investigations led by prosecutors, ABW, and police. Polish Prosecutor Katarzyna Calów-Jaszewska stated that the investigation targets foreign agents involved in damaging industrial facilities and infrastructure like airports and airplanes. The group also tested sending self-combustible parcels to the US and Canada.

Security Measures Heightened

The US Transportation Security Administration has implemented additional security measures for certain cargo shipments heading to the United States. "We continually adjust our security posture as appropriate," the TSA stated, emphasising collaboration with industry partners to mitigate risks. DHL's spokesperson in Germany confirmed cooperation with authorities but withheld specific details.

In July, incendiary devices ignited in Germany and the UK. One incident occurred at a DHL logistics centre in Leipzig, delaying a connecting flight from a Baltic nation when it caught fire on the ground. British counterterrorism police are investigating a similar incident at a DHL warehouse near Birmingham on July 22.

Russian Espionage Concerns

Dirk Heinrichs from DHL stated that the company is working closely with authorities to ensure safety. Meanwhile, MI5's Director General Ken McCallum highlighted a significant rise in Russian attempts at assassination and sabotage in the UK. "The GRU is on a sustained mission to generate mayhem on British and European streets," McCallum noted.

German intelligence head Thomas Haldenwang reported increasing Russian espionage and sabotage activities in Germany. He warned that Russia uses various tactics, from influencing political discussions to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. "Russia's willingness to use force proves it is willing to put human lives at risk," Haldenwang said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed media reports of the alleged sabotage plot as "vague fabrication." Despite denials from Moscow, Western nations remain vigilant against potential threats from Russian intelligence activities targeting their territories.
