Head of Guinea's Junta Defends Recent African Coups at UN General Assembly

The recent coups in Africa are attempts by militaries to save their nations from presidents' failed pledges, according to Col Mamadi Doumbouya. He rebuffed the West for boxing in the continent and urged global leaders to address the deep-rooted causes rather than merely condemning.

Recent political upheavals in Africa have drawn international attention, with a surge of military coups unseating established governments. The head of Guinea's junta, Col Mamadi Doumbouya, has defended these actions as necessary interventions to save their nations from the consequences of presidential broken promises. Col Doumbouya himself was instated as Guinea's interim president following a coup in 2021.

Recent Coups in Africa

In his address to the UN General Assembly on September 21st, Doumbouya urged global leaders not just to condemn the coups but also to examine and address their root causes. He boldly challenged prevailing narratives that label only those who overthrow regimes as putschists – or coup plotters. According to him, true putschists are those who manipulate constitutional texts for personal gain and perpetuate their hold on power indefinitely.

The African Coup Phenomenon

Guinea is part of a worrying trend across West and Central Africa where eight coups have occurred since 2020. Two other countries - Niger and Gabon - have also experienced similar military takeovers recently. These events represent significant shifts in political dynamics within these regions, raising concerns about stability and democratic progress.

A Double-Edged Sword

Interestingly, while these military takeovers are often condemned by international organisations and foreign countries as breaches of democratic norms, they sometimes receive support from citizens within the affected countries. This paradoxical situation suggests complex underlying socio-political issues that go beyond simple power grabs.

The Western Perspective

Doumbouya's comments can be seen as a rebuke against western nations for 'boxing in' Africa—a continent home to over 1 billion people—and ignoring the deep-seated issues contributing to its current state of affairs. His remarks highlight an ongoing debate about the role of external actors in Africa's political landscape and whether their interventions and criticisms are beneficial or detrimental to the continent's overall progress.

In conclusion, while military coups undoubtedly disrupt democratic processes and can lead to instability, it is crucial that global leaders heed Col Doumbouya's call. A deeper understanding of the root causes of these political upheavals is necessary for crafting effective solutions. By focusing solely on condemnation without addressing underlying issues, international communities risk exacerbating existing problems rather than helping resolve them. Africa’s complex socio-political dynamics require nuanced and context-specific approaches that prioritize the needs and aspirations of its people over simplistic narratives of power politics.
