Hostages Taken at Procter & Gamble Factory in Turkey Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict
In a concerning turn of events, two armed individuals took seven employees hostage at a Procter & Gamble (P&G) factory in northwest Turkey on Thursday. This incident, reportedly motivated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, has garnered significant attention and raised concerns about the safety of the hostages and the broader implications for US-Turkish relations.

Suspects and Demands
Turkish media outlets have released an image of one of the alleged suspects, depicting a man wearing what appears to be an improvised explosive device and brandishing a handgun. The suspects entered the main building of the facility in Gebze, Kocaeli province, at approximately 3 pm local time (1200 GMT) and took seven staff members hostage. Their actions are believed to be a form of protest against the loss of life in the Palestinian enclave, where over 27,000 individuals have reportedly been killed since October 7, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry.
Hostage Negotiations and Company Response
Ismet Zihni, the husband of one of the hostages named Suheyla, spoke to DHA news agency from near the factory. He revealed that he had managed to briefly speak with his wife over the phone, during which she informed him that they were being held hostage but were otherwise unharmed. Police authorities swiftly sealed off the surrounding roads near the factory and initiated negotiations with the hostage-takers to ensure the safety and release of the hostages.
Procter & Gamble's headquarters in Cincinnati, United States, acknowledged the ongoing incident and emphasized the company's top priority of safeguarding the well-being of its employees and partners. A spokesperson stated that they had evacuated the Gebze facility earlier in the day and were actively collaborating with local authorities to resolve the urgent security situation.
Public Sentiment and Diplomatic Tensions
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has sparked widespread public sentiment against Israel and its primary ally, the United States, in Turkey. Major cities across the country have witnessed regular protests in support of the Palestinian people, accompanied by demands for an immediate cease-fire. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been particularly vocal in his criticism, openly referring to Israeli actions as "war crimes" and drawing comparisons between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
These heightened tensions have prompted the US Embassy in Ankara to issue a warning in November regarding demonstrations critical of US foreign policy and calls for boycotts of American businesses. This advisory was issued in response to earlier protests and attacks targeting outlets like McDonald's and Starbucks due to the Gaza conflict.
Suspect's Image and Hostage Celebration
The photograph of the suspect disseminated by Turkish media shows him partially concealing his face with a black-and-white Arabic headscarf. He is seen standing next to a graffitied wall displaying the Turkish and Palestinian flags alongside the slogan, "The gates will open. Either musalla or death for Gaza." A musalla refers to an open prayer area for Muslims, often used for funeral rites.
In a somewhat surprising turn of events, DHA also released a photograph depicting some of the hostages celebrating a birthday within the factory. It was reported that the staff had brought a cake to work for one of their colleagues, and the hostage-takers surprisingly allowed them to proceed with the celebration.
The hostage situation at the Procter & Gamble factory in Turkey highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics and public sentiment surrounding the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. As authorities work to resolve the situation peacefully and ensure the safety of the hostages, the incident underscores the need for diplomatic efforts and dialogue to address the underlying tensions and promote regional stability.
