President Biden Voices Love, Pride for Son's Addiction Recovery After Verdict
President Joe Biden, maintaining a stance of non-interference, refrained from attending the trial where his son, Hunter Biden, faced felony gun charges. Despite the distance, the President's response to the jury's guilty verdict on Tuesday underscored his deep familial bonds. "Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today," President Biden expressed, highlighting the journey of recovery many families witness in their loved ones battling addiction.

The White House, following the announcement of the verdict, cancelled a scheduled briefing by press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and disclosed President Biden's plans to spend the evening in Delaware. The conviction has reportedly stirred concerns among Biden's aides and allies regarding its emotional toll on the 81-year-old president, who has previously experienced personal loss intertwined with his public role. However, it is understood that President Biden's primary concern lies with his son's wellbeing rather than potential political repercussions.
The verdict was delivered shortly before President Biden was due to address a conference on gun violence prevention in Washington, hosted by the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund. Subsequently, plans were made for the President to travel to Delaware to be with his family, including Hunter, before his departure to Italy for the Group of Seven summit.
Throughout the trial, a strong family support system was evident. First Lady Jill Biden was present in court nearly every day and even made a significant commute from France to attend. Unfortunately, she missed the verdict announcement by minutes. Hunter Biden, upon arriving at court each day, passed a portrait of his father, a symbolic reminder of their enduring connection.
In his statement post-verdict, Hunter Biden echoed sentiments of gratitude towards his family and community for their support during this challenging time. He emphasized the possibility of recovery through divine grace and expressed his appreciation for experiencing such support.
The trial provided an intimate glimpse into Hunter Biden's struggles with drug addiction through testimonies from close relations and visual evidence. Prosecutors aimed to establish that Hunter's addiction was central at the time he purchased a firearm, thereby questioning the accuracy of his statements on a gun-purchase form.
Prosecutor Leo Wise highlighted the necessity of presenting personal and compelling evidence to illustrate Hunter Biden's state during the gun purchase. Despite the personal nature of the trial, Wise reminded jurors to focus on the evidence presented.
Even amidst political divisions, empathy for the Biden family's situation transcended party lines. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) acknowledged the universal challenge of witnessing a child struggle, emphasizing the shared human experience beyond political affiliations.
