Pope Francis Hosts Prayer in Vatican Gardens to Call for End to Gaza Conflict

In a poignant gesture of solidarity and hope, Pope Francis convened a special prayer meeting in the Vatican Gardens, bringing together the Israeli and Palestinian ambassadors to the Vatican. This event, held on Friday, was designed to echo a similar gathering from a decade ago, underscoring a renewed plea for peace amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The assembly saw the participation of around two-dozen cardinals and members of the Holy See's diplomatic corps, including Israeli Ambassador Raphael Schutz and Palestinian Ambassador Issa Kassissieh. Notably, representatives from Italy's Jewish and Muslim communities were also present, highlighting the interfaith dimension of the appeal for peace.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of an unprecedented meeting that Pope Francis hosted in the same location. Back then, Israel's President Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas came together in a moment of unity that followed a period of stalled US-mediated peace talks. Pope Francis had expressed hope that their summit would initiate "a new journey" towards peace.

Reflecting on the current situation, Pope Francis lamented the toll that the conflict has taken, particularly on children. He reiterated his call for both sides to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza and for the immediate release of hostages to Israel. "All this suffering, the brutality of war, the violence it unleashes and the hatred it sows even among future generations should convince us all that every war leaves our world worse than it was before," he stated.

In his remarks, Pope Francis has been careful to maintain a balanced stance regarding the conflict in Gaza. His initial comments had sparked controversy by appearing to lean towards support for the Palestinians. However, he has since made efforts to acknowledge Israel's suffering as well and reiterated his call for the return of hostages taken on October 7 when referring to the war.

The Vatican's initiative underscores a continued commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians. By recalling a significant moment of unity from ten years ago, Pope Francis aims to remind the world of the urgent need for peace and reconciliation in a region long torn by conflict.
