Pope Francis Remains Alert Despite Critical Condition and Early Kidney Failure

Pope Francis remains in a critical state, battling pneumonia and a complex lung infection, according to the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff is alert and "well-oriented," attending Mass despite early signs of kidney failure. Blood tests indicate mild kidney issues, but doctors say they are under control. The Vatican noted no further respiratory crises since Saturday night, though he still requires high-flow oxygen.

Pope Francis in Critical Condition Yet Alert

Doctors have expressed concerns about sepsis, a severe blood infection that can follow pneumonia. As of Friday, there was no evidence of sepsis, and Francis was responding to his medication. He developed a low platelet count, known as thrombocytopenia, which can result from medications or infections. Platelets help blood clot and heal wounds.

Prayers for Pope Francis

Prayers for Pope Francis have poured in globally, from Argentina to Cairo. In New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledged the Catholic community's concern, stating, "As our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile health, and probably close to death." Dolan spoke at St. Patrick's Cathedral without confirming any independent information about the pope's condition.

In Rome, Archbishop Rino Fisichella led Mass on behalf of Francis at St. Peter's Basilica. He offered prayers for the pope and delivered a homily prepared by Francis. "Even though he is in a hospital bed, we feel Pope Francis close to us," Fisichella told the deacons present.

Francis' Health Challenges

Pope Francis has chronic lung disease and often suffers from bronchitis during winter. He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after a week-long bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors diagnosed a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection followed by pneumonia in both lungs. They prescribed rest and a combination of cortisone and antibiotics.

In Argentina, Catholics gathered at Buenos Aires Cathedral to pray for him while the city's obelisk displayed "Francis, the city prays for you." Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb from Cairo wished him well on Facebook: "I pray to Allah to grant my dear brother, Pope Francis, a swift recovery and to bless him with good health and well-being so that he may continue his journey in serving humanity."

Recent Reforms by Pope Francis

Recent reforms by Pope Francis suggest he was aware of his advancing age and frailty. Last year, he revised funeral rites to emphasize his role as a bishop and allow burial outside the Vatican per his wishes. In December, he appointed 21 new cardinals under age 80 eligible to vote for his successor.

Earlier this month, despite being ill, he extended the term of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as dean of the College of Cardinals. He also extended the term of vice-dean Cardinal Leonardo Sandri. These decisions reflect his awareness of his health challenges.

Schoolchildren from Rome sent get-well cards to Gemelli Hospital while Italian bishops led rosary prayers across Italy. The Vatican stated that despite the complexity of his condition, doctors remain cautiously optimistic about his recovery.
