Polyglot, Armed With PhD In Particle Physics: Mystery Woman's Name Surfaces In Beirut Pager Blasts
Cristiana Barsony-Arcidiacono, a 49-year-old Italian-Hungarian CEO and owner of Hungary-based BAC Consulting, has been thrust into controversy after her company was linked to the deadly exploding pagers that killed 12 and injured more than 2,000 people in Lebanon.
Despite the revelations, Barsony-Arcidiacono denies direct involvement, telling NBC News, "I am just the intermediate. I think you got it wrong."

Barsony-Arcidiacono, who speaks seven languages and holds a PhD in particle physics, has led an unconventional career.
After obtaining her doctorate in positron physics from University College London in the early 2000s, she shifted focus away from the scientific field, moving instead into humanitarian work across Africa and Europe.
Descriptions from acquaintances and former colleagues paint her as an intelligent but somewhat restless figure, never settling in one job for too long and occasionally embellishing her CV, reported Reuters.
One acquaintance from Budapest, speaking anonymously, suggested that Barsony-Arcidiacono was someone who "could easily be used" and described her as "good-willed" but not a typical business person, instead prone to jumping into new endeavors with enthusiasm.
Her work history is varied, including a contentious stint in 2019 when Kilian Kleinschmidt, a former UN humanitarian administrator, hired her to run a six-month program funded by the Dutch government to train Libyans in Tunisia in areas like IT and business development.
Kleinschmidt recalled Barsony-Arcidiacono as a difficult manager, stating, "Cristiana. That was one of the biggest mistakes of my life, I think. It was simply awful on a personal level." He ultimately cut her contract short by a month.
Barsony-Arcidiacono has remained out of the public eye since the pager controversy emerged. Neighbours in Budapest report not having seen her, and her once-open apartment door has now been shuttered.
Her residence in a stately old building reveals her artistic side, with life drawings of nudes in red and orange pastels taped to the walls of her vestibule. Though she had previously attended a local art club, the organiser described her as "more of a businesswoman than an artist," noting her upbeat demeanor.
Her academic credentials, while genuine in some respects, appear to have been exaggerated in others.
While her PhD from University College London is confirmed, other claims, such as additional degrees from the London School of Economics and the School of Oriental and African Studies, could not be verified.
Similarly, a claim on BAC Consulting's website that she was a "Board Member at the Earth Child Institute" was refuted by the charity's founder, Donna Goodman, who said Barsony-Arcidiacono had never held any role there, merely contacting the organisation about a job opening in 2018.
Other aspects of her CV are also dubious. She described herself as a "Project Manager" at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2008-2009, organising a nuclear research conference. However, IAEA records show she was only an intern for eight months.
BAC Consulting, which had its website taken down shortly after the pager controversy, provided little information about its operations in Hungary.
The company was registered to a serviced office in a Budapest suburb, and its business focus remains unclear. On her CV, Barsony-Arcidiacono characterised herself as a "scientist using my very diverse background to work on interdisciplinary projects for strategic decision-making (water & climate policy, investments)."
Despite the mounting questions, Barsony-Arcidiacono portrayed herself as someone who enjoys working in multicultural environments, writing that she values "diversity, integrity, and humour."
