PM Modi's Visit To Maldives: Know Its Significance To Strengthen Bilateral Relations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's pride in being the Maldives' most trusted ally. He announced a Rs 4,850-crore credit line to the island nation. This announcement came shortly after India sealed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom. During his two-day visit to the Maldives, Modi also revealed plans to initiate FTA talks with the country.
Modi emphasised that regardless of circumstances, India's friendship with the Maldives remains steadfast. "Mausam chahe jaisa bhi ho... our friendship will always remain bright and clear," he stated at a joint press conference with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. The leaders discussed enhancing defence capabilities and regional security through the Colombo Security Conclave.

Strengthening Economic Ties
The discussions between Modi and Muizzu focused on trade, defence, and infrastructure cooperation. They agreed to work towards finalising a bilateral investment treaty alongside FTA negotiations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later mentioned that both countries expect swift completion of this agreement.
President Muizzu highlighted India's role as a crucial tourism market for the Maldives. He announced plans for direct flights to boost tourism connectivity. "We discussed ways to expand this vital sector through enhanced cooperation and connectivity," he said.
Environmental Cooperation and Infrastructure Development
The two nations explored opportunities for collaboration in waste management, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, and water sanitation. Modi inaugurated several projects in Addu, including roads and drainage systems, and handed over 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale under India's Buyers' Credit facilities.
India will provide 72 heavy vehicles to the Maldivian Ministry of Defence. Additionally, an MoU was signed on fisheries and aquaculture cooperation. Another agreement involved sharing successful digital solutions implemented at a population scale.
A Warm Welcome
Upon arriving in Male, Modi received a warm reception from President Muizzu and top ministers. A colourful ceremonial welcome followed at Republic Square. "Deeply touched by President Muizzu's gesture to welcome me at the airport," Modi shared on social media.
The visit marked a significant turnaround in bilateral relations after initial tensions when Muizzu assumed office in November 2023 amid an "India Out" campaign. His early policies strained ties but New Delhi's consistent support helped mend relations.
Commemorating Diplomatic Relations
The leaders released a commemorative stamp celebrating 60 years of formal diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives. On Saturday, Modi will attend the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations as Guest of Honour.
"India is proud to be the most trusted friend of Maldives," Modi said, highlighting India's role as a 'First Responder' during disasters or epidemics. He reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting the Maldives economically post-Covid-19.
