PM Modi Offers Support As Cyclone Chido Devastates Mayotte, 22 Dead, Over 1,400 Injured

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte, a French overseas territory located near Madagascar. The powerful cyclone, with winds reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h, struck the island and its surrounding archipelago on Sunday, claiming the lives of at least 22 people and injuring over 1,400 others, as reported by Hindustan Times.

In a message posted on social media, PM Modi extended his condolences to the victims and their families, stating, "Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I am confident that under President @EmmanuelMacron's leadership, France will overcome this tragedy with resilience and resolve. India stands in solidarity with France and is ready to extend all possible assistance."

Cyclone Chido's Devastating Impact on Mayotte

The cyclone left a trail of destruction in Mayotte, with authorities fearing that the death toll may rise as many areas remain buried under rubble and roads are blocked. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau called the situation "completely devastated," noting that 70% of the population has been affected by the disaster, as reported by Hindustan Times.

In addition to the casualties, the cyclone caused significant damage to infrastructure and homes, further compounding the hardships faced by the residents of the island. Relief efforts are underway, with 400 additional paramilitary personnel deployed to assist the 1,600 existing staff members in rescue operations and rehabilitation efforts.

France Takes Emergency Measures

To maintain order and facilitate recovery efforts, the French government imposed a nighttime curfew from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM, effective starting Friday. The curfew aims to prevent looting and the spread of diseases in the wake of the disaster. With a significant portion of the population living in poverty and lacking safe housing, the situation remains dire.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who termed the disaster a "tragedy," vowed to visit Mayotte in the coming days to oversee the relief operations. The French government is working to restore water supplies, with an initial target to restore 50% of the water system within 48 hours. In addition, 20 tonnes of food and water are being sent to the island to assist the affected population.

Widespread Effects Beyond Mayotte

Cyclone Chido also severely impacted neighbouring Mozambique, where at least 34 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 300 others have been injured, as per media reports. The cyclone brought heavy rainfall, reaching up to 250 millimetres (10 inches) in just 24 hours. This has led to further flooding and infrastructure damage in the region.

Experts have warned that the increasing intensity of such cyclones is linked to the rising global temperatures and the effects of climate change. Cyclone Chido is the strongest to hit Mayotte in over 90 years, highlighting the escalating risk of extreme weather events as the planet continues to warm.

India Offers Support in Crisis

In these difficult times, India's message of solidarity and willingness to assist is a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations. As Mayotte works toward recovery, PM Modi's assurance of support underscores India's commitment to humanitarian assistance in times of crisis.
