PM Modi Declares Lok Sabha Win a 'Victory of Democracy' at G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address at an outreach session of the G7 summit in Italy, underscored the significance of the recent Lok Sabha elections in India, describing the electoral win as a triumph for democracy. The session, which took place at the luxury Borgo Egnazia resort in Apulia, saw Modi sharing insights into the vast scale of what is considered the world's largest democratic exercise. This event marked Modi's inaugural international engagement following his re-election as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, a victory achieved by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the general elections.

Modi: Election Win a Democracy Victory

The Lok Sabha elections, conducted between April 19 and June 1 across seven phases, culminated in vote counting on June 4. Modi's visit to Italy was upon the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni to attend the 50th G7 Summit. His discussions at the summit covered a range of topics including artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Notably, Modi shared the stage with global leaders including Pope Francis.

Highlighting the electoral process, Modi revealed staggering figures: over 2,600 political parties participated, more than one million polling booths were set up, and around five million electronic voting machines were utilized. The election involved approximately 15 million polling staff to cater to nearly 970 million eligible voters, of which 640 million cast their votes. Modi emphasized the role of technology in ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process, leading to swift declaration of results within a few hours.

In his speech, Modi reflected on the democratic spirit of India, referring to the election as "the biggest festival of democracy in the world and in human history." He expressed gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve India for a third term, drawing parallels with Jawaharlal Nehru's three consecutive electoral victories in 1952, 1957, and 1962. Modi's re-election signifies a historic moment as it marks the first instance in six decades for a Prime Minister to be re-elected for a third term.

The recent Lok Sabha polls saw the BJP securing 240 seats, falling short of an outright majority but leading the NDA to victory with a total of 293 seats. The opposition Congress party won 99 seats while the INDIA bloc garnered 234 seats. Additionally, two Independents who emerged victorious have also extended their support to Congress, increasing the INDIA bloc's tally to 236 seats.

Modi's address at the G7 Summit not only highlighted India's democratic values but also underscored its ancient heritage as the mother of democracy. His participation in discussions on global issues alongside international leaders reflects India's growing influence on the world stage.
