Rescue Efforts Underway

Authorities in the central state of Puebla reported on Wednesday that the body of a guide leading an ascent of the 18,619 feet (5,675 meters) volcanic peak had been discovered. Sadly, another individual from the 12-member climbing group met their fate earlier on the peak, also known by its Indigenous name Citlaltépetl.

Rescue teams are working tirelessly to retrieve the guide's body, which was found at an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet (4,600 meters). Meanwhile, the search continues for the remaining missing climber, leaving hope alive for their safe return.

Challenging Conditions and Past Incidents

Pico de Orizaba's unforgiving terrain and unpredictable weather conditions have made it no stranger to accidents. Since 2015, rescuers and climbers have stumbled upon at least three mummified bodies preserved in the mountain's snow, believed to be climbers lost in a tragic avalanche in 1959.

In recent years, the mountain has witnessed several fatal incidents involving foreign climbers. In 2018, a member of the US diplomatic mission lost their life during an ascent, while in November 2017, another American climber perished, and seven others were rescued.

Just last year, in 2023, four Mexican citizens fell victim to a climbing accident on Pico de Orizaba, underscoring the inherent risks associated with conquering this formidable peak.

The Pico de Orizaba tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers that climbers face in their pursuit of reaching great heights. As rescue efforts continue, the mountain stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the unwavering determination of those who dare to challenge its treacherous slopes.
