Palestinian Student Files Lawsuit Against Michigan School Over Teacher's Reaction to Pledge Refusal

A lawsuit has been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of a 14-year-old student, Danielle Khalaf. The student claims she was humiliated by a teacher for not standing during the Pledge of Allegiance. This act was in protest against US support for Israel's actions in Gaza.

Lawsuit Filed by Palestinian Student in Michigan

Danielle, whose family is of Palestinian descent, chose not to recite the Pledge over three days in January. Her teacher allegedly told her, "Since you live in this country and enjoy its freedom, if you don't like it, you should go back to your country," according to the lawsuit.

First Amendment Rights and Emotional Impact

The ACLU and the Arab American Civil Rights League argue that Danielle's First Amendment rights were violated. The lawsuit claims she suffered emotional and social harm, including nightmares and stress. It seeks financial compensation for these damages.

Mark Fancher, an ACLU attorney, praised Danielle's bravery. "We can only marvel at the conviction and incredible courage it took for her to follow her conscience and her heart," he stated.

School District's Response

In February, Danielle spoke at a news conference about her experience. "It was traumatising, it hurt, and I know she could do that to other people," she said regarding the teacher's actions. The school district claimed it had taken appropriate action but did not provide details.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools emphasised their stance against discrimination. "Discrimination in any form is not tolerated by Plymouth-Canton Community Schools and is taken very seriously," they stated.

An email seeking comment from the school district went unanswered on Wednesday. The case highlights ongoing debates about free speech and discrimination in educational settings.
