Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Leaders Detained Outside Parliament, Claims of Democracy Under Attack

Pakistani police detained top leaders of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), outside Parliament House on Monday. The arrests followed a National Assembly session, as reported by local media. Among those arrested were Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, and Advocate Shoaib Shaheen, according to police spokesperson Jawad Taqi, quoted by Dawn newspaper.

Arrests and Reactions

Marwat was reportedly the first to be taken into custody. PTI condemned his arrest in a post on X, stating, "The PMLN government should be completely ashamed of this step against a sitting MNA." The party labelled the action as a direct attack on democracy and accused the capital police of following "illegal orders." They urged the inspector general of police in Islamabad to halt these actions.

In another post on X, PTI criticised the "illegal" arrest of Barrister Gohar. The post read, "This is a moment of shame for the entire parliament, as this must be considered a direct attack on the remaining democracy in Pakistan. Speaker NA should be ashamed for allowing such disrespect of parliament. Pakistan has descended further into the undeclared Martial Law."

Legal Context and Further Condemnations

Sources informed Geo News that Marwat was arrested for violating regulations under the new Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024. He was accused of clashing with police personnel a day earlier. A statement from Marwat’s account on X said: "The state has once again proved how afraid it is of Imran Khan and his soldiers!"

Omar Ayub Khan, the leader of the Opposition, also condemned the arrests. He alleged that Islamabad Police had formed teams to arrest him, PTI leader Zartaj Gul Wazir, and other colleagues. Omar wrote on X: "This fascist regime and its backers have gone completely mad. Just found out that they have included my name along with Zartaj Gul sahiba and other colleagues in 2 additional FIRs."

Imran Khan's Legal Troubles

The 71-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has been embroiled in numerous legal cases. He has been in prison for nearly a year after being sentenced in a graft case. Khan was arrested on August 5 last year following his conviction in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Omar added that other PTI lawmakers were still inside Parliament House due to the police presence outside. "Our only crime is that we have dared to challenge the status quo and raised our voice for our beloved leader, PM Imran Khan sahib," he stated.

Broader Implications

PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari strongly condemned the arrests and demanded immediate release of the leaders. He said on X: "Over a year now and they are still using the same tactics that have failed again and again. These illegal arrests won’t change anything. Only increase the public’s anger and hate towards this puppet government and backers."

Sources indicated that more PTI leaders, including Hammad Azhar, Kanwal Shauzab, Naeem Haider Panjutha, Amir Mughal, and Khalid Khursheed, are also expected to be arrested soon.

The situation highlights ongoing political tensions in Pakistan as authorities continue to target opposition leaders amidst widespread criticism from PTI supporters and other political figures.
