Norwegian Student Arrested on Espionage Charges for Allegedly Spying for Russia and Iran

A Norwegian student in his 20s has been detained on suspicion of espionage for Russia and Iran while employed as a security guard at the US Embassy in Oslo. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, has been ordered to remain in custody for four weeks. According to Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, he co-owns a security firm with a dual national from Norway and an unspecified Eastern European country.

Norwegian Student Arrested for Espionage

Norway's domestic intelligence agency, PST, stated that the man was apprehended at his home garage on Wednesday. He is suspected of compromising national security through intelligence activities. The district court's arrest warrant mentions that police discovered records of his communications with someone allegedly directing his espionage efforts, as reported by NRK.

Security Concerns and Legal Proceedings

The suspect has confessed to gathering and distributing information to Russian and Iranian authorities, according to the court order cited by NRK. However, his lawyer, John Christian Elden, told NRK that while the man acknowledges working for a foreign nation, he denies the espionage charges. "He is charged with having obtained information that could harm the security situation of third countries," Elden stated.

Oslo police announced plans to review the operating license of the suspect's security company. PST confirmed that the man was employed as a security guard at the US Embassy in Oslo. Currently, there are no additional suspects involved in this case.

Academic Background and Previous Incidents

The man is pursuing a bachelor's degree in security and preparedness at Norway's Arctic University (UiT). This incident marks the second such case at UiT in recent years. In a notable prisoner exchange with Russia in August, one individual was identified as a UiT guest researcher who had been arrested on espionage charges in 2022 under the alias José Assis Giammaria but was later revealed to be Russian national Mikhail Valeryevich Mikushin.

Norway shares a 198-kilometre (123-mile) border with Russia in the Arctic region. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Norway has significantly restricted entry for Russian nationals. In September, the Norwegian government considered constructing a fence along its border with Russia.

PST spokesman Thomas Blom mentioned during a Thursday night news conference that it is premature to discuss specific details of the man's activities. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather more information about the case.
